Just for kicks to break up monotony of everyday threads...

Considering that predators often are not alone (gangs, groups of looters, knock-out gamers, groups of drug dealers at corner, etc.), what would be your choice, of the ones listed, if you could only carry one subcompact model gun in relation to caliber and capacity they offer?

I listed three choices of very similar size and shape, at roughly 21.5oz each, solely for the purpose of comparing personal preference of caliber/capacity. The mfgr/model is completely irrelevant for this poll (assuming perfect reliability, no loyalty to any one brand, and equally comfortable to carry). Just three very similarly-sized guns from which to pick one to have on your person if your life was on the line.

The Springfield XDS .45acp - 5rd mag
Glock 27 .40SW - 9rd mag
Glock 26 9mm - 10rd mag

If everything is truly equal I would rather have 9 40's than 10 9's. I might change my opinion if I am ever actually in a situation.

Not sure this really breaks up the monotony of the caliber wars, but what the hell. ;)

Also, including specific handgun models will absolutely skew the results to some degree, regardless of your instructions otherwise. Plenty of people don't even read the entire OP before voting in a poll. If you can edit them out, you should do that and just leave the caliber/capacity for consideration.

I vote for 9mm. We're not in the '80s and '90s anymore. There's no significant difference in effectiveness between the major service calibers with today's bullet technology. Logically, I'd rather have more rounds.

For me, it's not about caliber so much as capacity. All three of these calibers will make a bad guy rethink his life choices on the way to the hospital (or the morgue, as the case may be), and I would rather have more bullets than larger bullets. More rounds equals more opportunities to defend myself and my family effectively.

Yeah, I'm kinda with ya, Austin. I like the 9mm's a ton too, all three calibers for that matter. I guess I'd choose the .40 mainly since I go into my heavy, hilly timber a decent amount, along with being good for daily carry in city. I somehow feel a little more covered in case I happened to see a small lion or hog - not to get into that discussion of what's adequate and appropriate for those two animals:). Just saying it makes me feel a little better...

I'm in the same camp, Mikey. I actually carry 9mm for capacity advantage 80% of the time and .40 just about the rest, for the reason you mentioned.

9 rounds vs 10 isn't that much difference...

9mm is just easier to shoot though, more so as the size of the pistol decreases.

For this poll I'm trying to avoid the terrible balance of the baby glocks...If you're going to carry something that thick step up to the 19/23.

I would rather have 8+1 9's in a Shield...

I voted for the Glock 26, had one and it was a nice gun (I am sticking with my G19). I would rather error on the side of faster follow up shots and an extra bullet.

I prefer .40 to 9mm in a duty-sized handgun but in a sub-compact like the Baby Glock I would rather have 9mm so the .40 loses by default.

The Glock 30, which packs a whopping 10 .45s in a package not much large than the 26 or the 27 is, relatively-speaking, probably the most capacious centerfire pistol I know of and beats the pants off of any of these guns.

I will never carry a glock-style trigger without a thumb-safety but I love the 30 so much that I have seriously considered buying one and getting the thumb-safety kit installed by a gunsmith I trust. I really have not found a single pistol that can match the capacity of the Glock 30 in standard magazines (relative to its size).

Most people seem to find the 26/27 to be easier to shoot than a comparable single-stack subcompact, and I'm with them. The short grip doesn't bother me at all; sure, it feels funny but it doesn't affect my shooting. And that's what matters.

My primary carry guns are a 6+1 .45, and a 13+1 9mm.
Both seem like good balances of "power" and capacity.

I didn't vote, couldn't agree with any of the choices.

MY Glock 26 has 12 round magazines, Glock 19 steps up to 15 rounds.

For heavier use, my Glock 21 gives 13 rounds of .45ACP.

Nothing on your list is over 10 rounds, and nobody carries 5 rounds anymore.

@jnichols-
Was just comparing three guns of same size and weight and what caliber you're most comfortable with inside them...Brand/model didn't matter for poll.

I actually know lots of guys that still carry the xds .45 with flush 5rd mag, w/or w/o one in shoot...I have one but don't carry it, but lots still do.

I have changed from 45 (Sig 220) to the 40 S&W in my Sig 229 simply because of capacity. With one spare mag have 24 rounds available. With the 45 only 16. Neither is a small pistol. Just my observations on Caliber and capacity.

I left the 38 six shot snubby after the movie theater debacle.

I voted for the Glock 27 .40SW - 9rd mag. My reason is, because if a situation like that ever comes up, I'm going to line up 2 B.G. behind each other, and you know the rest of the story.
.45, because shooting twice is silly.

Here are some thoughts. I stop in a parking garage and get out of my car only to be confronted by a crack head with a gun pointed at my stomach. My children get out of the rear doors and are behind me. I want an 800 magnum coming out of the barrel of the gun I pull on that perp. Here is another thought. I have done allot of shooting with the superb G27 and G33 (depending on the Dept. issued caliber of the time.) I tend to activate the slide stop while shooting those calibers and lock the gun up halfway through a mag because I'm over griping the gun. I can shoot quicker and more accurately with a G26 9mm. This is just me but it's a valid concern for off duty/CCW piece. If you don't have any issues with the 40 S&W in that frame size than pick it, if your like me than go with something different. I'm waiting to try the G30S myself.

Try not to go where gangs of predators are. If you must, then more is better. More bullets equals more ammo to shoot at more predators. 9mm is good, the more the better. I have been thinking about the FNS9 compact. 12 rounds should cover the average gang of predators. I only say that because my EDC is the full size FNS9, and compatibility has to count for something.

Sorry, I know that is not in your poll.

.45 is even better, but for a gang of predators you might have to reload.

Out of those choices I would roll with the G26. Plus you can add a magazine extension on their and get a few extra rounds if need be.
