caliber conversion inserts.....

I have an NEF in 30-06. It's great for deer, but the rest of the year is spent on crows, bobcats, racoons, coyotes, etc. I know I can get a .223 barrel for the NEF, but I was thinking as a temporary solution, getting one of those caliber sleeves in .30 carbine ($20 @ cabela's).

Is the .30carbine bullet is the same diameter as 30-06? Will the sleeve ruin accuracy? Will the .30 take these critters out at 100 to 150 yards?

Thanks

1. Yes.
2. Maybe, but doubtful.
3. Yes-if it hits them. Accuracy with 110gr. bullets is sorta spotty. The twist in most .30 are usually 1x10 for 150-180gr bullets. 125gr's may group better.
hope this was helpful.

Not familiar with the internal workings of the NEF. How do you handle the different diameter of the case, between the '06 and a smaller cartridge? Do you change the extractor?

If this extractor change is needed to use the .223 barrel, would it not also be needed for use of the insert? (If the extractor is built into the barrel, I don't see how the insert would be workable.)

Just stuff to think about,

The ejector is a part of the barrel. Each barrel has it's own ejector. I think the way the insert would work is you would put the .30 in the insert and put in chamber and close action. Fire the round. When the action opens, it will pop the insert and .30 shell out. Then you would repeat as needed.

i think they only charge about $60 bucks for extra barrells.i would have several fitted when you send it in.

been down that road and...

My experience with the chamber inserts is that they give marginal results at best. I never got acceptable accuracy and unless your have a pocket full of the inserts small game or varmit hunting with them is a hassle. It is good to be able to shoot cheap 30 carbine ammo, but reloading 30-06 for varmits works better for me. The reloading section has a tremendous amount of information about downloading the 30-06 for plinking and varmits. 170 grain gaschecked cast bullets at 1500fps are good medicine for whatever needs shooting. Try Beartooth or Laser-Cast.
