I have been trying to figure out which are the most common calibers criminals use to commit crimes.

It's hard for me at least to find this data because suicides are included in most of the data. The profile of some person who uses a firearm to end their life is much different from the criminal robbing a liquor store, mugging people or most scary to me: car jacking.

Maybe this data isn't even collected.

Does anyone know what the most common calibers are used by criminals for robberies?

9mm

There's another thread running in which a poster cited police stats showing that the 9mm is by far the most frequently encountered handgun caliber in the hands of criminals.

The thing that got me thinking about this is my thread on body armor.

The step up from Level II to Level III is to protect against 10mm to 10.8 mm (.40" -.430") 240ish grain / projectiles traveling in the 1430fps range.

And .355 - .357" 158ish grain projectiles traveling in the 1410fps range.

Figuring out the probability of encountering a bad guy wielding a 10mm with hot rounds, a .44 magnum, or a .357 magnum might be a factor in decising to go with a more comfortable Level II vest

That would be a very good decision to go with level 11 (unless you got shot with a 10 MM!!! Then it'd prob be a bad choice...
