caliber availability?

Depends on what you want to do with it...hunt, target practice, etc.

Without knowing anything I'm gonna say .223 is easier to find and cheaper per round.

I'm planning on getting a rifle just for range use. Some of the nice ones don't come in .223 so I've debated about the .243 but I'm not sure how available it is or the costs involved.

243 is as easy to come by but not quite as cheap. 243 is not really a target load so mass produced FMJ ammo is not really out there. it's all soft point or premo bullet options so it's a little more expensive.

I have seen 243 on the shelf at Wally World when there was no .223. There seems to be .223 / 5.56 on the shelf now. On a side note there was always 270 Win on the shelf.

If you are buying top quality target grade ammo or loads with better bullets suitable for big game hunting price is about the same. You will probably find more 243 ammo available loaded for big game. You will find lots more budget fmj 223 ammo and at considerable better prices. Depends on what you want to do with the rifle.

At the local wally world .223 is almost always available. $5ish/20 for tula $10ish/20 for eagle or some such and $69ish/50 M885.

.243 is a lot harder to find, there might be s box or two once in a while. IIRC it was $15ish/20 for some redbox stuff with an eagle on it (can't remember exactly and I think $17-23ish/20 for some rem.

Might want to browse the stores near you ammo shelves for a couple weeks and just see whats available. Early mornings are usually good for the best pickings if you have the time. The next closest wally world is near a much larger city and their ammo shelves are almost always bare, so YMMV.

Right now 243 is easier too find. 223 will be cheaper, but it is a much more common load so availability is still not the best. Reload and then it don't matter.

"cheap" .243

When I bought a .243 about a year ago, I found that Graf's in Mexico MO carried Prvi ammo in that caliber for about $15 a box. I also learned that the PRVI cases are excellent for reloading.

Many of the online suppliers carry this ammo and I have even seen it advertised @ Cabelas.

My advice, buy the .243 so you will have an excellent deer and other game caliber when you get the desire to shoot more than paper.

"Cheap" is an extremely relative term nowadays. I have seem .243, not in abundance, but still there on the shelves when no one had .223. An order of magnitude increase in performance for the price. You would be well served by it.
