Cabelas and bulk ammo purchasing

Hello all, and great forum you've got here first and foremost...

To the point of my thread...

I've read alot of the ammo related threads. I don't seem to understand it however as I've never had a problem what so ever with acquiring ammo. But after spending spare time doing some searching, I've seen that Cabelas has some nice deals on bulk ammo (500-1000 ct.) Now maybe I haven't been shooting long enough to see the big price factor I've heard of. Regardless at this time, it seems pretty good as comparison to Wally World, and your local FFL. I'd like to support my local as much as possible but the prices seem to good to pass up.

Any input on the type of ammo they have, customer service, and any other thing I could possibly need or want to understand about this. Nothing is too obvious or hidden, so sound off fellow shooters. Even a better price elsewhere is always an added bonus.

Thanks,
GTI

Without saying anything bad about Cabelas (and lord knows I could!), here is a popular list of online ammunition dealers floating around the forums. Check out a few of them to make sure the "bargain" at Cabelas is really a bargain! And just because Cabelas has ammunition on sale does not mean they have it in stock! Of course they will take your order, but they may not be able to deliver it for months!

Good luck!
Scott

I find their customer service to be top notch. I have not purched 'bulk' ammo from them as I find their prices a little on the high side. I shoot a lot of .44M and if I break the bulk price down to cost per round, it comes out higher than some other sources. The problem with some other sources is they are sometimes back-ordered on what you want. Do the math on you chosen caliber and break it down on a cost per round basis and that will help you determine how you want to proceed.

i buy from cabelas

right now i have a 20 dollar off coupon if i spend 150$
(which is easy to do with ammo)

if i buy certain bulk ammos, there is a 15 dollar ammo case
included in the purchase

linking these together with either using the cabelas visa, which
gives you a 2% rebate...or just the club membership, which only
gives you 1%, you do save some money

granted, the prices are a little higher, but it does equalize if you
do the math....if you factor in the coupon and the free case
and subtract that off the price and then find your per round
cost, you can see that it is a pretty good deal....

most bulk is back ordered right now, but they tell you the approximate
fulfillment time....and send emails to remind you that it is eventually
coming.....

I have the Cabela's Visa, so rack up points every time I fill the truck up, or pay the monthly daycare bill, but I don't usually buy ammo from them. Prices are just OK, and there are lots of other things from them I use my points on...

Before you buy from *any* online business of any kind, I strongly recommend checking both in forums like this (where people who use that type of business hang out) and the Better Business Bureau in that area (www.bbb.org). Those two things have saved me a world of trouble.

I have some bulk ammo on backorder with Cabela's. Their latest estimate shipping date: after 8/6. That's a long wait.

Sakeneko - If it was someplace I had never heard of, I would agree, but Cabelas is not exactly a fly-by-night operation.

My opinion (for what its worth) is they are one of the best companies to deal with that I have found.

I occasionally buy reloading components from Cabela's, mostly bulk bullets. Haven't seen any real deals there lately, though.

Cost of ammunition is up all over - but I buy some reloading components from Cabelas - in fact I just picked up 5,000 bullets last week in 9mm, .40 , . 45 acp, .357 mag and .44 mag ( Berry Mfg ) and they're good bullets at a competitive price.

I'm lucky, I have a Cabelas retail store about an hour or so from me / so its reasonably convenient to run down there once in a while. I think they're a good company to deal with.

I love the Cabela's experience, there is one about 30 minutes away, but I would never consider it to be anywhere near the lowest price. The sales can be good, the Bargain Cave occasionally has very good deals, but I hate to buy anything at list price there because it will be cheaper somewhere else.

Ammo to go, Natchez SS, Wideners, and AIM have been getting my ammo and reloading supplies business.

Friend of mine just got his bulk order in a week or so ago from Cabelas. 300 rounds of 45acp, which he ordered back at the end of March. The prices they have on bulk aren't horrible if do you don't mind paying for the ammo box as well, and can stand the wait. I have been starting to see 9mm and 45acp show up on Wally World shelves around me, but it still doesn't stay for very long. Saw 3 boxes of 45acp value packs and 9mm this morning, while looking for some 22lr in bricks for my father-in-law.

Cabellas Ammo

If you call and happen to get the right CSA, they will be very accomodating. They will tell you which ammo is coming in when. Last time I ordered from them, there was about a one week delay from when she said the ammo would ship to when it actually ship. I was very pleased to get my 380 ammo.

thank god for walmart (never thought id say that) but they started to get ammo more since about may. pretty much have everything execpt .380 in stock a couple of days after the weekly shipments

Well, much appreciation for the response and links all. I'll check them all out. LOL not kidding! Seems like for the most part people agree they are on the better side to deal with. The Dundee store is within comfortable driving distance. Maybe I'll pop in there one day.

Also, while I was browsing their site. I seen big red stamps telling you if it was out of stock and on back order. Are those accurate? Or have you guys seen the same "back order" issues on some of the items they've said to have in stock. Just asking, because this seems to be a big problem in our hobby/trade.

I have used a LOT of handgun ammunition (.380 ACP, 9x19, .357 Sig, .40 S&W, .38 Special, .357 magnum, 10mm, .45 ACP, .45 Colt) during the last forty years, and I tend to buy in bulk (at least 1000 round lots) to accrue some marginal savings. My experience with Cabelas' ammunition is BAD; the .45 ACP I purchased was junk: dirty, inaccurate, many misfires, bad primers, and so forth. In general, however, I think Cabelas is an excellent outfit -- but not for ammo.

I recommend you try Ammoman.com, Midway-USA, Cheaper than Dirt, etc., that you look for sales (difficult to find now), that you buy in bulk, and finally that you use quality target/plinking rounds (Winchester USA, MagTech, Remington UMC, Federal American Eagle, and so forth).

Cabelas

I'v used there ultramax ammo in 40 S&W in bulk clean ammo with no issues I would be suprised if you can get any ammo soon they are backordered too

I recently ordered 600 9MM rounds from Cabela's online --- it was on backorder but came in before expected delivery date.

Great service and they don't charge your CC until the order ships! As stated above, it does come with a $10-15 ammo case that was not expected....

I've bought bulk from Cabelas, but only at the walk in store near me. And, only when they have bulk ammo on sale. When I'm not paying any shipping, it is cheaper than anywhere I've found online.
