CA registration and my SKS

I was wondering if I had to register my SKS here in Kalifornia.

I have a Russian SKS with the original 10-round magazine attached and I have removed the bayonet. I was looking through the DOJ guidelines for assault weapons and didn't think that it fit the general description of assault weapons, but wanted to get your opinions on it, or if anyone has any experience with CA and SKSs.

I'm glad I don't live in Kalifornia!!!

I wonder about the bayonet. I am sure the criteria is the presence of the bayonet lug and not the presence of the bayonet itself. Is the Kalifornia definition of an "assault rifle" different than that of the Federal definition?

kgs.

If it's a curio and relic SKS (Russian military surplus as issued), it's exempt from registration and can have the bayonet attached.

Turner's Outdoorsman, in southern California, is currently selling the Romanian surplus SKS, and they always play it safe.

The "SKS Sporter"s (recent manufacture, with/without detachable mag, and no bayonet provision) are the target of the registration scheme, regarding SKS's anyway. Kinda silly, eh?

i think you're safe, either that or we're both sol...just kidding. the sks's that are targeted are the one's with the removeable mags or been coverted to high cap mag.

sks have a fixed mag, no pistol grip (don't put one on), i'm looking at getting a romo soon

Correct. The Russian "stock" SKS's do not have to be registered (yet)and can have the bayonet. However, I'm sure they will get around to adding them to the list this year. The Chinese SKS's (except for the Paratroopers)are also okay but they cannot have the bayonet attached (go figure!). Yours is fine.

i thought the paratroopers, and other chinese sks, were originally a no-no because they were not C&R, which the russian guns are. it might also have somthing to do with folks adding, ease of, larger mags to them.

but now i understand that we can still buy romo sks because they have no pistol grip, removable mag or flash suppressor.

Here it is.

The Russian SKS is not illegal because it lacks a detachable magazine (even though it is easily converted ;)). In the PRK (People's Republic of Kalifornia), an assault rifle is defined as a centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine and any of the following: bayonet lug, plash suppressor, pistol grip stock, folding stock, and a few other of the rediculous cosmetic fancies.

Now, there are "Sporterized" SKS that were made to accept detachable AK 47 mags. All of those were declared illegal after their owners registered them and they must now be sold to the government and confiscated. So if your SKS accepts detachable AK mags, put it in the safe and leave it there...I mean turn it in.

Long live the PRK!

there was a newsmagazine article (60 minutes?) about California registration laws a few months back. One guy featured in the article got the printed guidelines and rules from the state. It said his SKS was okay. Being a bit anal, he then requested and got a letter from the state saying that his gun was not subject to the registration laws. Six months later he was charged with felony possession of an unregistered assault weapon.

No matter what you do, you are screwed.
