Gunman shoots 4, takes hostages on California pier
SANTA MONICA, California-- A gunman shot four people, including three police officers, early Tuesday on the famous Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California, before taking an unknown number of hostages.
A police negotiator was talking to the man to try to resolve the standoff, which started about 1:30 a.m. None of the victims' injuries appeared life-threatening, authorities said.
The incident began as Santa Monica police at the pier were arresting a suspect in a triple-homicide. The suspect's companion fled on the pier, and as police pursued him, he began firing a gun.
Three officers and a civilian are reported to have suffered gunshot wounds. The gunman then took an unknown number of hostages.
The gunman may be an accomplice in the triple-homicide, authorities said.
The Santa Monica Pier extends into the Pacific Ocean off the exclusive town west of Los Angeles.
