CA carry question

I could not get onto Calguns.net, so I came here.

I got stuck in the sand out in the Mojave desert today while sniffing out a place to plink with my new Beretta. I had to hike about 4 miles or so out of a canyon to get a weak cell signal. In 1 hand I carried a water bottle and in the other, the pistol. It was in the plastic carry case that came with it. I had a padlock through the handles. It was UNLOADED. I did not want to leave it in a stranded vehicle over night. It was not physically attached to my person in any way. I just carried it like a dinky suitcase. So did I break the law? What about in your neck of the woods where concealed carry is generally not permitted?

I'll let you know what Calguns sez if I can get a hold of them. Thanks.

Found my answer

I learned from Calguns that I was NOT carrying a concealed weapon according to an exemption in the CA carry laws. Carrying a pistol in public, unloaded, in a locked container is fine. But I'm not going to make a habit of it.

Forget the gun, you'll live longer if you don't make a habit of getting stuck in the middle of the Mojave with no cell signal.

I don't know if I'd call it an exemption in the law, more like a separate definition.

It varies from state to state, depending on the specific wording of the laws, but generally, an unloaded cased firearm is considered being "transported" which is legally different from being "carried", even when you are carrying the case in your hands,
