C&R vs FFL Question

Can a WW2 Colt 1911A1 legally be sent by the seller to a C&R holder ( the buyer) instead of a FFL? The pistol was made in 1942 and is original.

A C&R licensee is an FFL- just a different type of FFL than many folks are used to dealing with. :)
Can a WW2 Colt 1911A1 legally be sent by the seller to a C&R holder...?
Generally yes, but the transaction must still comply with state law, and a C&R license does not always trump state law.

What is the destination state?

Unless state law prohibits it, a C&R (03/FFL) can receive a qualified firearm from anyone in the USA either face-to-face or via shipment (most common is either FedEx or UPS; the USPS will not ship a firearm from anyone other than an FFL).

So am I correct in assuming that a 1911A1 is fine to ship to a C&R although I can not find it on the BATF list? That is what's confusing to me. It is more than 50 years old.

50+ years old = C&R. A lot of these aren't on "the list", and many uninformed sellers won't sell to a C&R unless it's listed.
Early Weatherby's and Winchester Model 70's already qualify as C&R's and the first Remington 700's will be turning 50 next year.

Actually, as it's written, this statement is not quite correct.

A C&R licensee is an FFL- sometimes referred to as a "licensed collector"- but U.S. postal regulations specifically prohibit C&R licensees from shipping handguns that are not legal antiques. (A centerfire handgun must have been manufactured prior to 1/1/1899 or take ammunition that's not commercially available to qualify for antique status; an M1911A1 obviously fails on both counts.)

You have to hold a different class of FFL to legally mail a handgun- generally a Dealer, Manufacturer, or Pawnbroker FFL.

Anyone, including nonlicensees, can legally mail a long gun (rifle or shotgun) to an FFL- including a collector- in another state, assuming the transaction is legal in both the origin and destination states.
