C & B Powder

When I got into C & B pistols a number of years ago I bought 5 lbs of "P" pyrodex which is almost gone. A good powder but very prone to rust in cylinder/barrel. What do you veteran front loading pistol guys recommend.? Hodgdon suggests 777 (FFFg). I do not worry about soot etc but hate rust. Thanks :)

I use real Black Powder. "Goex"

+1

The more I use real gunpowder (a.k.a. black powder), the more I appreciate just how terrible it is not.
Yes, you gotta clean the gun after you are through but you gotta do that with the substitutes also, and black powder fouling practically rinses off with water.

Black powder is such a royal pain in the butt for me to get around here that I caved and bought a couple of pounds of Pyrodex P. I can't complain, except that it's not the real stuff.

Never shot Triple 7.

If you can't get Goex or other real black powder i would suggest trying American Pioneer Powder. It seems to work well in my revolver and is easy to clean, and no lube is needed.

I started using triple 7 even though it's a little more expensive; you use less so actually costwise it's about even, and cleans up as easy as any sub. and very little residue, which equals more shots between cleaning. I would use real b/p if I didn't have to order 25 lbs to be cost effective. No local dealer within 100 mi. sells it.

if you can't buy real black locally, check out graf & sons (www. grafs. com) and their selection - goex ($14.99), plus their own house brand ($13.99), and even swiss ($21.99) all shipped for free with only a 5 lb minimum.

(keep in mind there is a small handling fee and the usual hazmat charge.)

i've used their house brand many times and really can't tell the difference between that and good ol' goex.. hot water and liquid soap is all i need to clean everything.

works for me !

That's still 99.45. I can get the same 5 lbs of Pyrodex for 80 and I can buy it one lb at a time locally

My experience say that if you have to use a sub, go with APP. Both Pyrodex and 777 are guaranteed rust producers.

No, I use Pyrodex exclusively and have for years. I only tear my guns completely down maybe once a year if I think about it and I never get any rust. I clean just like I did when I could still get real black and use a patch soaked with Bore Butter in the chambers and bore.

Black Powder at Powder, Inc.

I purchased 10 lbs of Goex in my choice of granulations for $169.00 delivered to my door. That will give me 2-3 years worth of shooting, including the 1 lb of ffff primer for my flintlock. I've had good luck with Pyrodex in both P and RS, but real powder seems to give me a bit more accuracy with my pistols.

I have a few guns that show rust damage. All but one were used with Pyrodex. The other was an experiment with 777.
At the time the damage occured I was still under the impression that the guns used for black powder had to be cleaned with in 24 hours of shooting. These were and it wasn't quick enough.
I now shoot only real black, GRAF, GOEX, KIK and Skirmish. If the guns don't get cleaned for a day or two, and in some cases a week or two, there is no damage.

Noz I'm not disputing what you say but i live in the humid south and I frequently go for two or three days without cleaning and went nine once with no signs of rust. I use Pyrodex exclusively.
