Buying three or four Makarovs

Well, it looks like SOG and others will soon have the $99 to $109 Bulgarian Makarovs back in stock. I know that if I purchase more than two pistols within a one-week period, the FFL I buy through has to fill out additional paperwork etc.

Ideally I'd like to purchase one Makarov for myself, give one to a family member, and make another a birthday gift for a close friend of mine. Is this legal? Will I get a visit from the ATF for buying three or four makarovs in a single purchase?

Yes, so long as they can legally own a firearm.

Not very likely.

Buy three and four more. You can not have too many. I hope we get some more mismatched Russians. The one I have is getting lonely and I want to pimp one out in red and yellow moly =)

Hmmm.... this may be skirting the edge of legality if you fill out the 4473's and do the background checks for all the guns. Regardless of whether or not the recipient can legally own a gun, your buying it with the intent of giving it away may be considered a straw purchase. One of the questions on the 4473 asks if the gun is being purchased for you - if you say "yes" to this with the full intention of simply giving it away, that is bad juju.

This is, of course, on the federal level. There may be additional restrictions in place in your state. Here in PA, for example, private transfers of pistols between anyone except parents<->children is illegal. Your best bet may be to order the pistols yourself, but have each of the people fill out the 4473 and do the background check themselves. This way you also avoid that "2 or more pistols" form being sent to the ATF. Even though you are placing the order with the distributor and paying for them, the person filling out the 4473 and doing the background check would be considered the purchaser.

Read the back of the 4473 very carefully. It does draw a distinction between a straw purchase and a gift, complete with an example of each.

As long as the recepients don't make a "gift" of money in return, you should be just fine. Still, read the back of the form just to be sure.

PPK got it right, one thing I might add is a buy of 2 or more handguns need the form filled out. One copy goes to the local law enforcement, one copy goes to the BATF and a copy is kept by the dealer. The copies must be sent within 24 hours of the purchase. Hope this clears the question up. Happy shooting with the Maks you fellows. :)

If one spent enough time to learn all of the laws......There would be no time left to break them!!!

Just kidding....I think....?

If you want to buy a litter of Maks. You can always have a few close friends sign for some of them.

The Mak.....A mighty fine pistol for the price. I have a Bulgarian and an East German....No problems with either!!

That isn't true, if you pay for them you are the purchaser.
