Buying online

I am thinking of buying a gun that is for sale on-line (Guns America). The seller is very close to where I live so I could pick it up in person. What is involved in doing this? Is an FFL required since there is no shipping? Is there paper work required or can it be cash and carry?

The seller has never sold on line before so I want to make sure everything is done the proper way. He says the gun is registered but he has no papers. I don't want to end up with an "illegal" gun.

There is no gun registration, per se, in Georgia; you can't legally do a FTF sale with an out-of-state seller unless you meet with him at a GA FFL and fill out a 4473 form. So, assuming the seller lives in GA, the only paperwork he should have, if any, would be a sales receipt and the owner's manual.

Otherwise, I would meet in a spot that is public enough to make a robbery unlikely, but private enough that people won't flip out over the gun.

Or you could just meet up with an FFL and pay $20 or $30 for a 4473 transfer, to be on the legally safe side with regard to provenance.

He does live in Georgia, about 15 minutes from my house to be exact, although he says the gun was registered in FL. So, it sounds like no transfer or other paperwork is needed since we both live in GA.

When you say the only paperwork he should have, if any, would be a sales receipt do you mean a sales receipt for our transaction or from when he purchased the gun?

I don't think he is trying to do anything underhanded, it's just that I don't think he has ever done this before (nor have I) so I want to be above board with everything.

You might want to contact the Georgia BATFE field office and hear it straight from the authority instead of second guessing or hearsay.

Florida doesn't have firearm registration, either. I used to live there, bought a number of guns there, and still have a Florida permit... And I just moved from GA last week.

But KS makes a good point - you could ask your local BATFE types, since you don't know if any of us on TFL know what we are talking about.

My guess is he means he bought it, and so the original 4473 was filled out, in Florida. That is not a "registration," and he is unlikely to have been given a copy. (I have never been given a copy of my 4473 forms.)

He might have the purchase receipt from the vendor in Florida.
