Buying magazine while vacationing abroad: need advice?

I tried searching for old threads and couldn't find any. Please help with advice.

My mother is visiting Germany now. My father asked if she could bring him a couple of magazines for his HK USP. We aren't sure that she 1)could buy mags in Germany or have her sister buy them for her and 2)bring them in the US.

WHat think you on this issue? Thanks.

Not sure about civilians, but we military folks can buy magazines "downtown" with no problems. No ID card or anything...

Now remember, since we are all safe and secure after the 1994 Crime Bill, that those evil non-gelded magazines are not allowed to be even touched by the great unwashed. Any magazine manufactured after 13 September 94 must be marked as such.

Logically, then, if they are NOT marked then they must have been made before then, and are perfectly legal, right?

:D

Be careful, though, post-ban non-US market non-gelded Glock magazines are marked "post 13 Sept 94, Restricted U.S.". One more reason Glock bytes ("ballistic fingerprinting" at the factory would be another).

That's touchy. If she brings them into the US, then she is importing them. If I am not mistaken, unless an existing order is being filled, no more can be imported.

PreserveFreedom,

That's what I thought too at first but I wasn't too sure if individual civilians were subject to corporate importation laws.

It is illegal for US citizens to own hi-cap (over 10 rounds) mags manufactured after 1994.

If they are hi-cap, and if they can be identified as post-ban, customs will confiscate them if they are declared. If they are not declared and found in a luggage search, you are guilty of smuggling. I don't know if Euro manufacturers are marking mags not intended for export as to date of manufacture. I would guess they are, and it may be through some marking code other than an actual date on the mag.

If they are 10 rd and/or pre-ban, they could still be a hassle to bring into the country. I'm guessing customs would grab them and your mother would have the burden of proof to show that they are legal. Without written policy from customs in advance, I would not try to carry any mag into the country.

I might try mailing them, with a return address from a foreign citizen. If found by postal inspectors, which would seem to be unlikely, you are innocent, and the foreign citizen was just sending you a present, ignorant of US law. I would also wrap them with or inside something else, so they wouldn't show on xray. As they say at Paladin Press, the above is for educational purposes only, and is not advocating any illegal activity.

uh, how hard would it be to find an engraver there and mark them? Wanna really screw up the feds, except for the date, have the wording in German!!!! :D
