Buying handgun

I live in michigan and when I turn 21 I want to buy a handgun from a ffl dealer. I have a clean record. I already know what I'm getting and I'll have the money ready for it when I turn 21. I have autism or aspbergers I know that I am not a threat to anyone nor will I hurt someone only for home defense and range will I use it. But will I be denied because of my so called mental illness?

One of the questions on the form is something along the lines of "Have you ever been adjucated(sp?) mentally defective?" If they consider what you have to cause that to be a yes you cannot legally buy a gun. I have no idea what constitutes a yes to that question though.

Welcome to the forum, Kratos. My son has asperger. I don't believe there is anything on your legal record that officially deems you mentally defective. I would say no to the question. If they say otherwise, you will be denied... but there are appeals processes for that.

He is only 10, but I have had him out shooting several times (he lives in a different state with his mom) and he is fully aware of safe handling procedures. It's just minor social ticks/quirks and the way he learns that is different. I would fight tooth and nail for your right to own a firearm if I were you.

I'm not sure this is the section of the forum for this question, nor am I sure what section would be. As has been stated, unless you have been committed against your will or ruled mentally unstable by a medical professional and then had that ruling used against you in court, I would imagine you're okay. Frankly this is something I would bring to a lawyer, one whom is well versed in this area (not easy to find).

If you are seeing a counselor or coach for the autism/aspbergers, he/she may have a better answer for you or direct you to somebody who would know the answers.

My 16 year old son has something similar. He is always very willing to learn and tends to follow instructions to the letter. When it comes to knowing the responsibilities of having a firearm, safe/proper handling of a firearm and learning shooting techniques, he is very very good. He is like a machine when he works on anything; boy scouts, shooting, homework, and especially chores.

Good Luck.

I suggest you get an opinion on the local situation from an attorney there.

Also, discussing your potential legal problems on an open forum is not a wise idea.
