Buying an M1 Carbine >>>>

I know it; I've been there. I can't find it.

There is a Government web site out there (dcm ??) where vets can buy M1A1's and like weapons at a good price.

Will someone be kind enough to point me to the sight.

TIA

CMP is not selling any carbines, at least at this time. Any eligible buyer can buy from CMP, not just vets.

For general discussion, try http://www.gunandknife.com and go to their carbine forum. There are plenty of GI carbines available at gun shops and gun shows, and there are new-made ones available. A common GI mixmaster (not all original maker's parts) will go for around $400-500 in good condition. The M1A1 stock (folding stock) is rare in itself and they bring $700+ alone, without the carbine, higher on the auction sites. There are reproduction M1A1 stocks that sell for about $100.

Technically the CMP is not a Government organization. It's a private corporation chartered by Congress and the U.S. Army. The CMP's forerunner, the DCM, was a Government program for 50 plus years but Clinton and the Democrats tried to kill it back '94 or so. Thanks to Bob Dole and his Republican friends in congress it got privatized instead.

Currently the CMP sells to individuals: M1 Garands, a limited number of 1903 Springfields by lottery, and a variety of .22LR target rifles. To recognized Clubs they sell the above plus target grade Bushmaster AR15s and air rifles.

They don't currently sell M1 Carbines, M14s, 1911s, or M1As. I wish they did sell the Carbine, there has been speculation that they might at some point in the future but nothing definite, I'd love to buy one from them. -- Kernel

I believe Springfield Armory was going to start making new M1 carbines soon.. no nostalgia factor, but probably better quality than the mixmasters that you'll find now.

And, I know this isn't the selling forum, but I happen to have an original Inland M1A1 stock, manufactured near the start of the war, very good condition.. gimme an e-mail if you like ;)

Ramblings on topic

Kernel, CMP does sell carbines, but only to clubs with junior programs. Price on the website is $500 each. That is more than the club price for a Garand, which is $450. Curious.

I think I would buy a USGI Carbine before one from Springfield Armory. Even, a USGI "mixmaster" which are often not collectable, but just as good a shooter as one which is matching. Be aware there is at least one company buying surplus guns and building "all matching" carbines.

Springfield Armory advertised like crazy for a while, but has anyone actually seen their M1 carbine? IIRC, they were going to make receivers and use surplus parts.

Not sure about an M1A4. I have a book which talks about M1, M1A1, M2, and M3.

I am not aware of a M1a4

I have the M1 Carbine Collectors guide and they never mention an A4 version. They only list the M1, M1A1, M2, and M3.

Lmccrock, I was about to write back that you where full of it... then I double check the CMP site for myself. You're right! the CMP does sell Carbines (limit 5 per club). There's hope after all. -- Kernel
