Buying Ammo

I would like to know what is profit level dealers are making selling ammo.I bought 1000 rounds 223 federal for $200.00 and just before that I paid .60 a round at wal mart.In both cases I am sure they both made money but there was quite a diffrence in pricing. Can you buy direct from wholesaler if you bought 10,000 or more?I am sure wal mart is paying less than my local dealer

Walmart may be able to offer lower prices simply because they have the buying power to bypass the wholesalers and buy directly from the manufacturer.

You would need to order in the millions to buy direct from the maker. Different places have different levels of pricing. Do NOT assume that because one places may charge more that they are making a bigger profit. There is a lot more than that. Places who sell large volumes will get better pricing from wholesalers than folks who do not. There is rent, utilities, salaries/taxes/benefits, other overheads, carrying costs, interest, etc, that coupled with a profit % make up the final cost to you. Then there is supply and demand.

Walmart buys their guns and ammo from distributors - just on a larger volume scale than some other folks

That is not the point of the tread. The reason he doesn't want his name mentioned he sells to police dept's and is not supposed to sell to general public.

Well, I am a small FFl and can assure you that you need to send your "supplier" a nice Christmas present! The cost on most ammo wholesale is just under or right at what Walmart sells it at. This is why Walmart puts all the little guys out of business. Normal case price for .223 right now is between $300 and $400 per 1000 rounds. Then you have to get it shipped to you! Stick with your boy and you will be in good shape. Contrary to what many people think, the new gun/ammo industry is not very lucrative.

Yep. You got a "buddy deal". I just spent $300 on 1000 rounds of Hornady TAP Training .223 (steel cased) and feel like I did pretty darn good.

$200 for 1000 of Federal is a great price. I guess he gave you the agency price???

I'm with catfish on the Christmas present idea.

I'd like to know where you bought 1000rds of Federal .223 for $200.

Hell I bought 2000rds of 45 for $100.00and beach front property in Arizona

Boss,...ding, ding, ding, Da plane, da plane,... :D

I'd buy them at that price, and I don't even own a .223.

I was thinking about getting ffl and selling ammo and some guns to make a little side money.I am in the air compressor and parts business and business is very slow and the profits are very poor and I buy from manufacture direct

I think what you are asking, as far as profit margin, what is the mark-up the FFL is making? For FFL I do not know.
I do know that in the late 80's and early 90's most automotive repair shops charges and average of 30% mark-up on the cost of the automotive parts they sold. This did not include the shop labor rate. (I owned an auto repair business, that is why I know.)

So if I sold you a widget for your car, I paid the dealer $10.00 and then added 30% to the cost and charged you $13.00.
But if the Chevy dealer down the street bought the same widget for your car, it would have cost them $8.00 and they would have charged you $10.40 cents.

They had much more volume than I did and could obtain their parts much cheaper. But he had the same markup that I did. I hope this helps a little bit.

I promise you that NO money was made @$200.00 for 1,000 rounds of Federal. I doubt if much will be made @$300.00 per 1,000...............hpg
