Buying ammo

I might have to opportunity to buy a friends rifle but it fires a 9mm.

But because I am under 21 and in Minnesota I can not buy handgun ammo.

Is it possible for my parents to buy it (they have no handgun permit) and for them to give me the ammo?
Can I posses the ammo legally?
 
You should be able to buy it. Just tell the clerk that its for a Rifle. I have heard of peolpe doing that at Walmart.

3. FEDERAL AGE RESTRICTIONS
Federal law prohibits Federal firearms
licensees from selling or delivering any
firearm or ammunition to any individual
who the licensee knows or has reasonable
cause to believe is less than 18
years of age, and, if the firearm is other
than a shotgun or rifle, or ammunition
for a shotgun or rifle, to any individual
who the licensee knows or has reasonable
cause to believe is less than 21
years of age. (18 U.S.C. 922(b)(1), 27
CFR 478.99(b)(1).)

Ammunition interchangeable between
rifles and handguns (such as .22 caliber
rimfire) may be sold to an individual 18
years of age, but less than 21, if the
licensee is satisfied that the ammunition
is being acquired for use in a rifle.

1. You can buy 9mm for use in a rifle from a licensed dealer if you are over 18.

2. You can buy ammo for use even in a handgun from a private party or an unlicensed ammo dealer if you are over 18. (Remember, dealers in ammo only do not require a license to sell - only to manufacture).

3. Your parents can buy any ammo for you from a licensed dealer so long as they do not make any false oral or written statements to the licensed dealer regarding the ammo purchase. If they make a false oral or written statement to a licensed dealer regarding the ammo purchase, they will violate Federal law.
 
Maybe taking a couple of pictures of yourself with the rifle & some 9mm rounds would help with convincing the clerk, if that is your concern.
