Hi. I own many shotguns. my favored is my single shot winchester model 72A 20 gauge. BUt im gonna get a nice shotgun for turkey hunting when i get my taxes back.

im looking at a Remington 870 SPS-T super mag with thumbhole stock. but im also thinking i want to spend a little more and get the remington 11-87 version (same thing, just semi-auto).

now, turkey hunting, a pump doesnt really seem to matter i think one shut is all i would get any way. but i would like to use this same gun for like squirell hunting also. I am new to guns with changable chokes. and im sure the turkey choke that comes with it holds a tighter pattern then my fixed choke shotguns and would probably tear a squirell apart.

am i right?

if so, do they make chokes that will give a wider pattern that would be good for squirell hunting?

if so, i think ill spend the extra cash and get the 11-87 auto loader instead of the 870 pump.

lol, long post. thanks in advance for the replys.

a good choke for squirrel is a mod choke. so check out if you can get one of those for the shotgun you want to shoot for turkey. also for turkey, as you know, you will be using a full or extra full choke. The thing is, it really shouldnt tear the squirrel up too bad b/c you wont be shooting the 1 1/2+ oz load at it, as you would w/ the turkey. a good size is a 1oz to 1 1/8oz load of #6 shot. You could hunt squirrel w/ the full choke but i'd prefer something a bit more opened up. so far i've had excellent sucess w/ my mod choke from up close to 35 yards away or so. however two shots i took this season at distance have anchored the squirrel but it needed to be wacked against a tree to finish it. the cause for this can be any thing from luck, to the shells i use dont pattern well, to i need more choke, to i need more payload....

Sure. I use a turkey choke for turkey (of course) and a modified choke for everything else. Just make sure that the shotgun you get has screw-in chokes and not a fixed choke barrel. (You should be able to tell by looking at the muzzle.)

I think all remington shotguns have the rem-choke now(for sporting use anyway). IIRC, they come with imp cyl, modified, and full chokes with the gun.
