Buying a New AK

Well, I am kinda tired of buying malfunctioning Mini-14 aftermarket magazines (even PMIs!).

So, I am thinking about buying an AK semi-auto (the oft-discussed Romanian SAR-1, actually).

I've heard that some of these have bent sights or poorly heat-treated US-made parts. Have these problems been taken care of? Are the SAR-1's pretty decent, durable rifles?

I recommend you get a Bulgarian SA-93. I have one and love it.

Anyone else with a thought on the Romanian SAR-1?

The canted sight problem was suppodedly taken care of. Personally I haven't heard anybody complail about their SAR 1's. Ones I have seen on the range performed like a AK should. Get one while you can.

Get more than one SAR1!!! Get a SAR2 or two also.. Have fun & keep it safe!!

When your FFL calls for the order-specifically ask for straight sights. Most distributors will select one for you. They are a great rifle, cost less than a mini-14 and are sometimes more accurate (mine's about 2-3" off of a bench with iron sights). Mags are dirt cheap, as is ammo.

I got one of those Romainian SAR-1 AKs and I like it. Everything on mine was OK. Didn't have a chance to shoot it yet,But I like it ;) If you get one,Look before you buy.
And if you get it I don't think you will regret it ;)

Happy Shooting :)

Skorzeny,

As evident in the thread that I started in error, I just bought a SAR-3. I have little to no knowledge of eastern bloc firearms, but bought this one on impulse at the Hilliard gun show on Sunday. From what I understand..

The SAR-3 is the .223 version of the Romanian AK semi-auto clone. I wasn't interested in these with the 7.65 ammo, but when I found that they made them in .223 I found it much more worthwhile.

The one that I bought has decent wood, a very clean (non-pitted) bore, and obviously a stamped receiver. I haven't shot it yet, but I have shot several of the 7.65 versions. I don't expect MOA accuracy, but I have a Bushmaster for that. This will be a great plinker or house carbine (I live in the country) that uses the same ammo as my AR clone.
