Buying a handgun out of state.

I may be interested in purchasing a hand gun out of state, but need info on how to do it, or if it can even be done. Specifically, there aren't too many shops where I live, and the selection of handguns is poor. I live in northern Michigan, and Green Bay is the closest "big" city to me.
What would I have to do to buy a handgun in Green Bay? Is there any significant differences in laws between Michigan and Wisconsin (ie waiting period)?
Also, if anybody can give me any info (phone numbers/web sites) on prefered shops in Green Bay, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks a lot,

Mike

The laws of the state you have legal residence in, are the laws that would apply to you, along with the federal laws of course.

It's perfectly legal to purchase a handgun out of state but once you purchase a handgun from the out of state dealer, they'll have to transfer it to a FFL dealer in your local area. You'll have to pay the FFL dealer in your state a certain transfer fee and whatever other fees ie. background etc. After the firearm gets to your FFL then the waiting period (if you have one) begins.

A bit of a pain but thats what you have to do,

Ditto what bamf stated.

The FFL that has the gun probably will want a copy of the FFL that is receiving a gun.

Mike,

My understanding is that federal law precludes FFLs from selling handguns to out residents of other states (true also for long guns unless the states are contiguous and there is no state preclusion). No way I can see that a non-FFL-holding resident of Michigan can "cash-n-carry" a handgun from Wisconsin. You'll need to make arrangements with one of the local FFLs to receive the firearm for you. This will include having your local FFL provide the seller with a signed copy of his or her license.

Check out http://www.forthehunt.com. They have a nice page on how interstate firearms sales can be done legally.

Hope this helps.

After the topic was transferred to this forum, You asked a question whether you can go to Wisconsin and purchase a gun and pick it up yourself . Nope, you can't do that...if you could I'd be halling my butt to Nevada buying everything there to get away from all the CA crap fees and waiting period.

So if you want to do this, you'll definitely need a FFL dealer. Or just find a dealer in your state somewhere. There has to be one closer than Green Bay.

Thanks for all the info, but this really sucks. I have to travel 400 miles just to get my hands on a few guns I'm interested in, make a choice, have it sent to shop here, and pay an additional FFL charge. I guess I better do it before the restrictions get even worse.

Thanks a lot.

There is one other option. Buy privately in a state where private sales are not restricted, I believe Texas and Florida are 2 such. You can buy what you want without any ID, you just need the cash and NOONE in officialdom has any idea that the transaction took place. It's one of the last great loopholes, much beloved of IRA arms buyers.
