Buying a BP revolver

I have been looking at possibly getting a black powder revolver for a little while now and I have searched and read different postings on different models. My two big questions are, which one seems to be the most resonable model for a BP newbie and second, what hoops does one have to jump through to buy one either auction, mail order or on line. FFL? C&R?

The main hoop is to buy it from Cabela's while it's on sale. The prices rise and fall considerably whenever they go on sale and come off again.

Another major choice is whether to get the 1858 model with fixed sights or target sights.

Other options include barrel length or stainless.

Cabela's 1858 Remington with a steel frame. Forget the starter kit buy the items separately. No hoops. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shoot...0;cat104503680

+1

Hands down the best value for starting out in BP cap-n-ball revolvers.

No FFL or C&R needed. No paperwork. Cabelas will ship direct to your house via UPS.

Looks like the target version is on backorder. Recommend the one above as your entry into the world of BP revolvers.

the only hoop to jump through having someone there when it is delivered to sign for it, other than that no problems, and if you can DO NOT order caps and powder online they whack you $20 for hazmat shipping. Rem #10 caps fit my gun perfectly. also look the gun you get over really good, run the action a few times make sure it is perfect, cabelas will not let you return it once you fire it but im sure some people clean em up real good and send em back.

When I bought my 1851 Confederate Navy from Cabellas, I didn't have to sign for the gun when delivered. The blasted delivery truck driver (UPS, FedEx?) left the box sitting at the end of my driveway next to the road, 150 feet from my front door.

Well...

....I have all of mine shipped to the college. All deliveries are made when someone is present to sign. Course most of them come in the USPS mail. That don't work with Cabella's.

I started out with the '58 Cabela's special almost a year ago, and it's still my go-to cap n ball. Lot of bang (flash and smoke) for your buck.:D

mine was shipped adult sig required, maybe your driver was lazy

HA.. Mine did too. My 17 y/o daughter signed for it though... Mine you, I'm not complaining. Would have been a PITA to drive 20 miles to the nearest UPS location.

Thanks everyone and I'm really happy to be aboard. It's nice to have people that know what their talking about instead of me trying to figure it out and ending up broke and really unhappy. I had a 50 cal. Hawkin about 30 years ago but it's all different from a black powder revolver. Thanks again!
