Buy now...or wait..?

Hey TFL,

At long last I have decided that I will get the XD Mod.2 4 inch as my first handgun. Springfield is doing one of their promotions until the end of this month for 4 extra mags, a holster, and a magazine pouch. All I care about are the 4 extra mags, not so much the other stuff. Anyway, I'm just a 21 year old kid currently on summer break from college. I work during the semesters and take the summers off work and just take a class or two. I have saved up more than enough to buy the gun, but if I buy it, I won't have a whole lot left for the rest of the summer.

Does the 4 extra mags included in the promo make the gun worth buying now, or would I be better off waiting until I start work again during the fall semester in August?

Thanks in advance.

4 extra magazines is about $100 worth, if you buy at Midway USA prices.

My inclination would be to wait.

What about finding a summer job? I worked as a school janitor for a couple summers barely breaking minimum wage before my co-op company decided to keep me around between semesters. And there was always farmers needing help baling hay who paid in cash. I made enough working through college to pay my tuition, feed my fishing addiction, and even bought a couple cheaper guns.

If a job is out I’d wait. After graduation and you start working full time it won’t be such a big deal to buy more magazines at a higher price. Money can be tight during college. You don’t want to be watching your friends go and have fun while you’re stuck at home fondling your new gun because you blew your load.

I think you answered your question right here. It sounds like buying the gun really cuts into your savings, which is not great for a 21yr old kid, and your savings is already really low if its <$1000..im not even sure how you would make a car payment. If you are dead set on buying a gun you could always get something like a SW Shield for 1/2 the price of the XD until you graduate and get a real job and have real money to spend.

I'm very set on the XD so I'll take your advice and wait. I'll go with my second plan which is apply for my carry license now and then get the gun later on. Thanks for clearing this up!

Buy it now. Grab some ammo and start shooting it. If it was your third or fourth handgun, I'd say wait. But if you don't have one now, I say buy it. Choice is yours , but I can't imagine not having a handgun. The horror. The horror.

Smart decision.

One thing to consider is the preowned market. I have a fairly large collection. Many of my guns are pre-owned.

Even magazines are sold off by users all the time.

Depending upon your local market, there are many websites or groups (I used to be active on Florida Gun Trader dot com). I also looked in many gun forums such as AR15 dot com, Usual Suspects Network, Jerzee Devil, etc.

With gun ownership, you have to also have ammunition, targets and range time. If friends own farms that is the cheapest way. I'm not that lucky so I belong to a private gun club. All of this costs a certain amount of money. That needs to be factored.

Part of growing up and being an adult is figuring out life decisions such as this one. Know your expenses, budget, and do what is right for you. As others have said, consider the used market, check out pawn shops, etc.

As others have noted, consider both the used market and the fact that gun bring all kinds of peripheral expenses with them. Ammo, range fees, etc. I'll also just note that Springfield runs that promotion with some regularity, so it's not like it's the last time you'll ever be able to get some free swag from them.

Sounds like you made a smart decision, its not like they stopped production of this model. They will be available later when funds allow.

I bought my xds in 9mm and got the free promo stuff in 4 weeks(in the mail). Pretty happy with the deal personally. 2 flush mags, 2 extended, dual mag carroer and a lil kydex paddle holster(which actually works good). So now I have 6 magazines all together all for the $363 bucks that I paid for my gun.

I appreciate all the replies!

I am well aware that buying a firearm isn't the end of the expenses and necessities. Luckily I can mostly opt-out of range fees because I live on my own land and can shoot all I want. But I do enjoy going to the range when I'm at my girlfriend's house near Atlanta. One of the reasons I'm not concerned with the other stuff in the promo is that I am a lefty, and I haven't seen or heard of anyone being able to get a lefty holster in that deal.

I really would love to jump on the deal now. I just took a handgun course on Monday and after we finished I hung around the gun store/range we used. They had a mod.2 in the new grey color which I thought was amazing. $489 was on the tag. I also have to consider which holster/carry position I want to buy and train with. I have been leaning toward appendix carry, but have also thought about a canted 9:00/8:00 position...but that's a question for another post.

Do some shopping around online for cheaper prices. I can get an xdm for less than $489 for that mod 2 price. You'll go through a couple holsters/positions until you fogure out what is best/most comfortable.
