buy a S&W revolver to carry

Stupid

I am too new here.

Thinking to buy a S&W revolver for my wife. They have like 100 different models and I am really confused. Of course, this will be a carry gun, probably in purse. So, small and powerful - something like 9mm? Do they sell revolers in 9mm?

Any suggestion?

http://www.smith-wesson.com and search by caliber..Isn't the Internet amazing? ;)

As for 9mm revolvers. THey did. I don't think they do anymore. .38+P will do ya just as good, though, from a 1 7/8" J frame.

And, let her pick. After all, she's gonna use it.

Small + Powerful = Lots of felt recoil.
So what kind of shooting experience are we talking about here? There are also companies that make purses for concealed carry - there is a holster built in. That can expand the carry options. Go looking through the websites together.
Never, ever buy clothing or accessories for a woman if they haven't approved of it first.

That said, I am not in favor of off-body carry. There are concealment holsters specifically made for women. Consider this - what is one of the more common crimes against women? Purse snatching. Where is the gun then?

The best way to do it is you just pay for the handgun. She does the shopping because you can't choose for her. It will be in her hand, her finger on the trigger, and her mind deciding if it's comfortable to shoot or not.
Has she made the decision to carry it or are these your thoughts? It's a better idea to have her register here and she ask the questions. There are women here also that can offer their insight.

S*****(that's an awkward handle!): I had a 442 and now have a 342pd (no longer made) which are really a handfull to shoot. If she's new to the sport, super light J-frames like those might, might give her big-time negative reinforcement. This has some more weight, and is pretty too:

Also, although not a caliber you mention, check-out the S&W 431 and 432 revolvers. My wife likes her 431...and now I want one!

I picked up a S&W 640 recently. I also have a 642 Airweight.

My girlfriend likes the 640 much better because of the recoil control and more of a grip. It's not that much larger than the airweight for purse or even holster carry.

Load it with .38 Special 110 gr. Federal low recoil loads and the weapon is much more controllable. If she likes an airweight...those might be the best load for her (I know +P is better, but a controlled hit/pair is better than 5 flyers).

Still, take her to the shop and let her decide and feel the guns in her hand and shoot if possible.

...

You can fire .38 Special rounds in a .357 Magnum revolver. Most people actually practice with .38 Special in their large frame .357s. They can help develop accuracy alongside the heavier loads.

I would suggest one of the S&W J-frame .38 specials. A lot of experienced shooters don't like the recoil of a .357 magnum in a J-frame and never shoot it. I believe the 9mm revlovers all require the use of moon clips but this is not a big deal.

In the .38 special caliber, she should initially shoot 148 grain wadcutters. These are about as mild of a load as you'll get. At the same time, they are pretty decent defense rounds because the flat nose tears flesh and tissue. Against heavy clothing (e.g., leather coats), then lack of penetration becomes an issue. Then she will want to move into the +p loads. First start with the 148 gr. wadcutters, though, until she gets used to shooting a handgun.

Most people suggest getting a hammerless model or a model with a shrouded hammer to prevent snagging when it is drawn from something like a pocket or purse. I have a model with an exposed hammer because I carry in a holster and I like the option of cocking and firing single action.
