stock stains
Sir:
I share your frustration. You know, there is one practice I use on military stocks that are fish oiled, grease coated, dinged, stained with every concievable crud there is, it's potassium permanganate.
What I've done to some that are light is to take a saturated solution of the stuff and steel wool soaked with it and really go after it! It will make the stock black if you really keep at it - but, let it dry and then start with more steel wool this times soaked with linseed oil (the entire stock flooded with it) and it will lighten into a nice walnut tone. Keep the linseed to it and see how it does.
I've got a Russian 91 I'm going to try and they're about the worst with a shellac finish! If your stock has dings you will need to steam them up or rasp them down and sand and "pop" the grain.
On others you can sand and "pop" the grain and do the same. "Poping" the grain is sanding and then spreading water over the stock and use the wifes hair dryer
D) and keep this up with finer grits of paper till it's smooth and then do this.
I believe it will cover up the water stain on your K-31s! You will need a prescription from your doctor friend for the potassium permanganate - it's a violent oxidier and will turn your fingers brown and won't wash off - it wears off!
