Butt Out...

I was wondering if anyone has used one of these while cleaning a deer? I purchased one a couple of months ago but have not used one. The directions say you insert it into the deer...twist it around quite a few times...then pull it out...it is supposed to pull it out and then you are tie it off and cut it.

What do you tie it off with? Do you take string with you?

After doing this it is my understanding you do not need to saw the butt bone out? Is this correct?

Thanks

Haven't used one, but the object of the tool is to be able to pull out a portion of the colon that can be tied off (yes, use string, shoelace, twine, etc.), then cut off and the 'sealed' end drawn back thru the pelvic area and pulled out w/ the rest of the gut - this way there is no leakage of fecal matter onto the meat. There is no need to cut the pelvic bone (I have never cut the pelvic bone, guess just the way I learned), just as I do not cut up thru the brisket as many do...not wrong or right, just "more than one way to skin a ..."!

a guy on my lease had one, he tried it w/ us all there and it didn't work like he thought. It may be a great tool but when he used it, no bueno. That's my limited knowledge / experience.

I've used it.

Works very well if you follow the directions

Don't pull too hard or fast, twist 1 1/2 (I Think) turns before pulling.

It's much easier and faster than the the old-fashioned way. My only recommendation is to put the zip-tie on over your hand before inserting the butt out because it's a lot easier than putting the... um, butt.... down to attach the zip-tie.

I use long sleeve rubber gloves, when I start to clean my deer. It takes about 1 minute to get them out of my pouch, and put on. It then takes about 1 1/2 minutes to clean the deer. I don't think any invention is going to improve on that to much.:)
Most of the meat surrounding the areas that need to be cleaned, are not going to be taken for table fare, and with a little care and a good watering down afterwards, I can't see any real benefit to the tool.

A good knife with a good gut hook on it, will do the job very nicely.:)

I was given a Butt-Out as a consolation prize of sorts - dude wanted to apologize for taking a while to ship a shotgun. I was in no rush and fine, but it was nice of him either way.

Anyway, I used it on two deer last year. The larger deer it worked like a charm. Much easier than "coring" the duff. The small doe I shot, it actually didn't just pull out but tore - might have been some operator error involved. Anyway I like it and will continue to use it. Not to say it's perfect, but it's certainly quicker, and very effective when it works like it's supposed to.

Butt-out--Yaccgh!!!

I've never had any problem with cutting the skin around the anus, pulling out the colon and tying it off. What for this gadget except to make $$ for the manufacturer?

Personally, to me, the idea of using a big plastic device to accomplish this is repellent!! For one, you're using up petroleum to make the plastic, plus it's one more thing to carry around while hunting, but mostly, this device forces me to think of Vlad the Impaler, and his horrid notions of fun in the Middle Ages. Look him up yourself; I won't describe here, what he did.

Ecch!

My buddy used one last year on a decent sized buck. I'm sorry but I couldn't stop laughing the whole time he was doing it (his first time with the tool). To our amazement, that thing worked like a champ! It sure made for some good conversation back at camp. I think we all have one now in our bags...

My brother used one last year to dress a doe. He couldn't get it to work at first. All I can say is location, location, location. Once he figured that out it worked great

cleaning
Not one person has mentioned cleaning the tool. Not much fun I would say.

Yeah, um, I haven't tried this but I have good information that if you put a condom on it first it is easier.

Seriously, no, really seriously. That's what I'm told. I'm not kidding. As much as that sounds like a joke.

It's too much for me though. I just clean it the same as my knife and other tools of the trade.
