Butler Creek 10/22 stuff.

Been ghosting for a while, and thought I might be able to get some good feedback on this question:

Has anyone had any experience with products from Butler Creek? I have done some checking on 10/22 barrel/stock combos and it looks like decent equipment. How might their carbon barrels compare to Volquartsen? Same for their stocks - anything to compare with Hogue?? Accuracy is my main concern, and price is a factor, but I want to be sure I have a genuine tack driver in my possession :-)

Also, If I were to purchase the standard 10/22 with sporter barrel and stock, would this be a drop-in kit (i.e. just take out the action and trigger group and pop them into the new stock/barrel?

Thanks in advance for any help...

crm, I looked at Butler for my 10/22 but found a Fajen thumbhole for a good price instead. My fluted barrel came from the folks at Green Mountain it was all drop in. I have found it to be very accurate and dependble. Had to get used to the extra weight though. I did buy a Butler folder for my Mini 30. Again it was drop in and fit perfect. The folding mechanism locks positively with no play. For the money I think it's worth it.

sumabich, thanks for the response. did you start out with the standard sporter (non-target) model and customize from there? this is my first custom 10/22 (had one when i was 15 but foolishly sold it) and i want to make sure i do it right :)

also, have you had any trigger work done? i have shot a couple stock 10/22's recently and they could have used some help. any thoughts on the volquartsen internals?

thanks again...

I've done what you're describing twice, both with SS non-fluted Butler Creek barrels, and volquartsen hammers, bolt releases, and mag releases. Both started a plain-jane stainless 'base models'. Accuracy has been excellent w/both--0.5'' for 5 shots at 50 yards w/green tag.

I've heard the factory HB models shoot quite well, and it will end up cheaper to do it that way. Not quite as 'personal' tho. (And I'll never understand why Ruger would make a scope-only gun with a stock comb-height that's only appropriate for iron sights!)

I think you'll be well-served by the BC barrel. Best, weegee

I have about a dozen of their Hot Lip 25 round mags and after about 12 years they are all still very reliable. I also have several 30 and 50 round mags from Ram Line but they are all sh*# after some use.

Use their scope covers on almost all of my scopes. Also use their foamy rifle sling. i use Uncle Mikes quick detach sling rings. Have a number of hi-cap Hot Lips mags.

Recently (about three months ago) purchased the stock/barrel combo. (Simply disassemble the receiver from the stock stock and barrel and bolt on the BCs.) Stock has the built in bi-pod, barrel is blue un-fluted. The parts are above average in quality, although the parting lines (from the mold it came off of) for the plastic stock are a bit high. I carefully trimmed them down flush. The checkering is nice and deep (almost unconfortable like a rasp) but I like that. The stock is almost all plastic except for the butt pad which is rubber. I think the Hogues are all (exterior) Kraton rubber - should be nice and soft. The receiver fits very snuggly. In fact, there was a spacer in the receiver hole when I got the stock to keep the sides apart. Once removed and the receiver placed inside, the sides literally fit like a glove. The stock also has a palm bulge on either side of the grip to fill the hand. The barrel is free loating from the retaining bar to the muzzle. The bi-pod is a bit flimsy, a lot less sturdy than I thought before purchasing the set. Overall a nice package. I have other customized 10/22s that are better looking and higher in quality but they did cost considerably more.

Have not fired it yet as I am a lazy a$$ and have not yet bought low mount blue Leupold rings for the blue Leupold scope which is ready for mounting. Ammo is ready too, Fed Ultra, Lightning, Green Tag, Wildcats, Thunderbolts. Just gotta get off my butt.

Also put in the Volquartsen adjustable trigger. Don't like the flat straighter surface but that's a minor gripe. Extended mag releases, trigger pulls, and quick release bolt are all easy to do yourself.

all,

i think i have pretty much decided on the Hogue stock. got any thoughts on barrel selection? i am currently looking at volquartsen, hogue and BC. as stated previously, potential for accuracy is my highest concern, but is the volquartsen really worth double the money?

ron, is the BC combo free floated when you buy it? or is that something you did or had done? i have almost ruled out the BC combo, but the more info the better :)

thanks again to all who have replied...

The BC combo is free floating, or at least is suppose to be, from the factory. I'm sure, like all manufactured products, some bad ones will probably get through but I've never gotten a bad product made from BC...yet. IMO BC's QC is well above average.

I put a Hogue over-molded rubber stock($50) and a BC Carbon Fiber barrel($100) on my 10/22 and ended up with a real nice little rifle. With Federal Lightnings it'll hold 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 57 yards. Maybe your higher priced ammo would do a bit better, I don't know. I can't imagine that a barrel costing twice as much is gonna improve the groups much more. BTW, I started with a heavy SS barrel and a laminate stock. I was able to auction the stock off for $70 and the barrel brought the same. So now the entire rifle weighs what the old barrel did and it only cost me $10 for the improvements.

I got the Volquartsen THM tension barrel and the Hogue stock. Great combo and quite accurate. The barrel free-floats in the Hogue stock.

Just in case nobody mentioned it ... welcome to TFL!

taco, based upon the prices I've seen at gun shows lately, you could trade those mag's for a cheap car, no? ;)

Live and let live. Regards from AZ

Oooo. Re-read my initial post and I think I could mislead with something I said.

When I said, "The stock is almost all plastic except for the butt pad which is rubber.", I meant exterior. There is a steel insert for bedding the action inside.

Finally zeroed the newly mounted scope and was only getting 3/4"-7/8" at ~65yds with Green Tag and Fed Target (thought I brought Fed Ultra Match but didn't). Did not feed Thunderbolts at all. Chamber too tight ammo too fat. Fed OK in my other 10/22. Oddly enough, the Thunderbolts did feed well in a tiny Marlin 15YN I was also zeroing. Was shooting ~5" at 65yds with CCI and Target. Ok, I guess, considering I couldn't press by face/cheekbone down enough into the stock to get a good sight picture. Had to aim from the back of the rifle. Plus, I was using an NRA 25yd so the front sight covered the target.
