Busted grip safety on 1911A1

The grip safety on this pistol does not work. What I mean is that the hammer will fall when the trigger is pulled with no pressure on the grip safety. It is not stuck in? I am assuming that I may need to replace a part. My question is what likely is the part that failed? Many thanks!

The grip safety, 1911, in the IN position is flush with the back of the frame. In the OUT position it's about 1/8" beyond the frame.Does it move in and out ? Are you talking about a 1911? have you ever completely taken the gun apart ? Not a difficult job with a 1911.

It still feels like it is "spring loaded" It will go in and out. The frame is a Goverment issued 1911 A1 original. I have not had it stripped past field stripping.

The grip safety in the down position is supposed to block the back of the trigger bow and prevent it from moving back and tripping the sear. It sounds like maybe someone somewhere down the line filed it to disable the grip safety. Sometimes this bar can be peened to elongate it or it will need replacing/refitting. It's not a biggie.

One thig you may be able to do depending on the frame cut out under the grips is remove the grips and see if the tab is blocking the back of the trigger bow. If it's not, you have your culprit.

When the grip safety is out all the way back, a lever inside blocks the trigger stirrup and prevents it from dropping the hammer via the sear. When you depress it, the lever raises up and allows the stirrup to slide under the lever, and fire the gun. With the left grip panel off, you can look up and see what is happening. Peening can be a quick fix , but a new stock safety is not expensive.

I think that it is going to be something as simple as the spring being bent slightly in too much. I have the pistol 100% disassembled and am working on cleaning all of the parts. When I reassemble, I will pay particular attention to the leaf spring.
