Many of Bush's appointees will have a quiet confirmation. Others will have their privates in a vise.
John Ashcroft, nominee for attorney general, is the most visible and controversial, target. Jesse Jackson and Co. are going to go all out to stop his confirmation. His crime is that he opposed the nomination to a federal judgeship position of a black member of the Missouri state supreme court. That judge was the lone dissenter on the court on a request to overturn a death penalty sentence. The bad guy had killed a sherrif's deputy, then went to the deputy's home and killed his wife, then went to the station and killed two other deputies. Ashcroft is also being pilloried for opposing gun control.
Gale Norton, nominee for interior secretary, is being targetted because she favors drilling for oil in Alaska's arctic wildlife refuge. They haven't been able to pin a "racist" label on her, so they've dug up some dirt. She apparently had an illegal alien working for her 10 years ago. Shades of Zoie Baird.
Linda Chavez, nominee for labor secretary, is another target. The unions don't like her. Also, despite the fact that she is Hispanic, she is being opposed by groups who purport to represent minorities. The reality is that she opposes affirmative action programs and the minimum wage bills.
Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, nominee for health and human services, is being opposed because he is pro-life. He never made a big deal of his position on this issue while governor of my state. I suspect the libs oppose him because he was in the forefront on welfare reform and school choice.
Some of the other nominees are taking heat for coming from the private sector (read: "big oil" or just "big business"). Strange that having done something for your country besides polish a senate seat for twenty years is somehow a detriment.
