Bushnell scope

I have a Mossberg 500 12 ga. on which I would like to mount a scope. It will be attched to the receiver, and not to a cantalevered barrel. I purchased the following scope (never used) for a lark and would like to know how it would stand up to the shock of a 12 ga.

Bushnell, Banner, Dusk & Dawn, 4-12 x 40mm, number 71-4124.

If this is not a good choice, then your recommendations will be appreciated.
 
Bushnell Banner is actually a pretty good cheap shotgun scope. I have a 2-7 on mine and its held up. I would think you would make out well with it
 
I have a 3-9 on my rifled slug barrel. While it is no Leupold (bright, smooth adjusting, ultra-fine cross hairs), it is a good, serviceable scope and works just fine (at about 1/10th the price).
 
I suspect a 4-12x is a might on the powerful side for a shotgun. In general, most of us have a tendency to over-magnify for the application. Sometimes "bigger is better" doesn't apply. Also, there is the parallax question, I'm guessing the 4-12x was set for 100 yards while archery, rimfire and shotgun scopes are typically set for 50 yds.

There's an anecdote about a hunter who got into archery to extend his deer season. He also got very serious about improving his stalking techniques to get in very close for arrow shots. During regular deer season, he takes his rifle with the big scope and spots a buck. Wanting to practice his newly improved skills, waited until his intended target was very close. Looking to acquire his target through the scope, all he saw was hair in a parallax view -- he had no idea at what part of the buck the big scope was pointing.

I feel 5 to 6 power is way to low imo. With todays guns a 200 yard shot isnt a problem with a set of shooting sticks or something. I like my 3x9. As stated above I have a 2x7 banner and am upgrading to a 3x9 slug hunter from Nikon to put on my T/C 20 gauge pro hunter
 
Thanks, all, for the information. I'll give it a try. Perhaps the 6x9 would be more appropriate and I'll keep that in mind.
