Bushmaster XM-15 muzzle brake??

I have a Bushmaster XM-15 on order. The model I'm getting has a 16" barrel and no muzzle brake. I'm considering getting an after market brake.

I'd like to hear your opinions about different muzzle brakes. I originally wanted either the AK-74 style brake or the mini y-comp muzzle brake factory installed on a 14.5" barrel, but I was unable to get that configuration from my dealer at the same low price.

I'm also not sure if I want to add an extra 2" to the length of the barrel. Does a muzzle brake really make that much difference on an AR-15? (I've never shot one without a brake.)

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can hardly feel the recoil w/o a brake and 223 is already loud. AK (and other styles of muzzle brakes) are ungodly hard on the ears, esp. of those to the side of you. I'd skip it (your muzzle crown is already recessed against damage).

i have bushy m4 with ak74 break, yes, if you are beside the rifle, it is unpleasant. felt recoil is nill.

there are some who think that the breaks actually hinder accuracy though. So if you want accuracy forget the break. but if you want looks the ak actually looks very good

Ditto what Oleg says; loud, not needed.
I sold my AK upper, got the M4 profile upper.
Love it!

I am more comfortable with the the extra length/ added velocity, and the gun no longer sounds like a cannon when standing under the shelter at the range.
