What is the general consensus on the Bushmaster M17S as opposed to the AR-15? what would one with a P00XXX numbered rifle be worth? Any serious problems associated with it?

The M17S is fun to play with, but I'm not sure that it's a serious rifle. The reliability is fine, the ergonomics suffer compare to the AR-15/M-16, and the trigger stinks.

It's a long plastic bar, and will make any other trigger you've used seem like the epitome of the gunmaker's art.

The M17S seems to handle pretty well, but I've got to question this gun's reliability. A friend just purchased (going rate seems to be $650+/-$50) one and it won't feed from the left side of the magazine. This is a third (latest) gen gun, and I've heard of others with the same problem. This gun is on it's way back to Bushmaster. It's totally unusable from the box. The irony is that the thing actually shoots pretty well, as long as you don't mind hand-cycling it. I'd steer clear of this one.
