Bushmaster 14.5" AK Brake?

I bought a Bushmaster XM15-E2S a while back. I haven't shot it much but have been fairly pleased so far. It has a 14.5" barrel and an AK type muzzle brake. Today I read a recommendation on the Maryland AR page against this barrel. Any comments or ideas about this particular barrel?

This is a carry carbine and I chose this version for its short length and light weight. I doubt I'll ever shoot it over 100 yards and I know I'll never shoot it over 150 yards unless I'm just goofing off. I live in brushy country and most shots are in the 25 to 75 yard range.
Thanks, Jack

Jack - the only negative report I've heard about the 14.5" barrel is that the AK brake is very loud.

The disadvantages of a 14.5AK barrel are:

1) Lower velocity - will effect terminal ballistics.
2) More flash - might blind you temporarily in low light.
3) More blast - the guy next to you better have ears protection.

Personally, I would rather have a light weight 16" barrel (thin contour, fluted, M4-profile, etc.) over a 14.5" just to milk every little bit of velocity without making the rifle unwieldy. But, I wouldn't mind having a light contour 20" barrel, either.

At last, it just depends what you want out of your gun. 14.5AK barrel might not be the best varmint barrel, and there are lighter/quieter 16" barrels available, but if your gun works for what you use it for, who cares.

i have a shorty "ak" and let me tell you the barrel is not light. it may be shorter but the barrel diameter under the handguards is closer to a target gun than a military rifle. the gun is 200 yard accurate to pop can sized targets, but if you only want short range i suggest you go for a fulton armoury millenial upper with the 16" barrel. you could even get a pre-ban, saw off the bayo lug, put on an ak-74 style muzzel break and weld it on. then you could have light and with the muzzel break. the break itself is great. it is only noisier to those to your right and left, behind the gun is about the same, and it works extremely well. no muzzel rise and no recoil.
