Bushing compensators: Do they work?

I have seen, in the Brownells catalog, compensators that replace the stock barrel bushing on a 1911.

Are they worth the money? Do they actually work ? If they do, would they be a low-cost alternative to someone who wasn't sure they wanted to go Open class?

Yes and no. They help hold down the muzzle end of the psitol due to the added weight (the yes part) but do little or nothing to reduce recoil through escaping gas redirection (the no part). To work as an compensator, the bore of the brake or compensator must be only slightly larger that the bullet diameter other wise the gasses will blow by and not be directed through the ports or vents on the brake (compensator).

A muzzle bushing brake has its bore slightly larger than the outside diameter of the barrel, and when the barrel is in a position to restrict gas flow through the brake, the gasses and bullet have exited the barrel.
