Handgun Control Releases 'Dangerous Dozen' Elected Officials With Pro-Gun Records
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by Handgun Control Inc.:
Sarah Brady, chair of Handgun Control (HCI), spoke those words at the Million Mom March in May. Today, Handgun Control released its "Dangerous Dozen" list highlighting the particularly dangerous records of elected officials, as it did in 1996 and 1998.
Leading the list, in a separate category, are Governor George W. Bush and former Congressman Dick Cheney. The National Rifle Association's chief lobbyist recently admitted to the New York Times that he could not think of anything on the gun lobby's agenda that the governor had denied them. Governor Bush's first
act in office was to allow Texans to carry hidden handguns for the first time in 125 years; a few years later, Bush liberalized the law to allow concealed-carry in churches, hospitals, nursing homes and amusement parks. In 1999, the Governor signed the bill
that prohibits Texas cities and counties from holding the gun industry accountable in court. And despite the Governor's last-minute post-Columbine verbal support for closing the gun-show loophole, he did nothing to assist a bill in the Texas legislature which did just that - and which failed in the last legislative session. Cheney was one of four members of Congress
to oppose a ban on plastic guns and one of only 21 to oppose a ban on cop-killer bullets.
Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan rounds out the dangerous Senate list. Endorsed by the NRA in 1994, Abraham voted against Handgun Control positions 11 out of 13 times, including votes against closing the gun-show loophole. He received $14,400 from the NRA and represents a state where determined NRA attempts to
weaken the concealed-carry laws have met with consistent defeat.
"This is the most critically important election we have ever faced," said Sarah Brady of Handgun Control, Inc. "When the votes are counted on Nov. 7, we expect to gain some new supporters of sensible gun laws, and lose some adversaries who are out of touch with the American people."
MCRGO SAYS: If Bush, Cheney and Abraham scare HCI, then these are the guys we need in office. Brady was right--this IS an important election. The anti-gunners are mobilizing to vote away our rights. Are you going to let them or even help them? If not, make sure you and every gun owner you know goes out to vote for the MCRGO-endorsed candidates on November 7th. No excuses--just do it.
