Bush will sign mandatory gun lock legislation

Today the Bush campaign officially announced that W., as President, would sign a bill mandating gun locks on guns.

That's also his position on National CCW and was his position on Texas CCW when he ran for governor of Texas.

What else is in store?

I'm a bit confused...

He would sign a bill mandating locks simply be sold with guns, or that guns in all households be secured with these locks?

Also, has it been verified that he would sign a national CCW bill?

Thanks.

Last night, during the debate, W. waffled on a question regarding his position on "voluntary" gun locks. He waffled his way into saying that he "wouldn't care". Well today, after the press jumped on him about it, "Which way is it, Governor?", he came out saying he wouldn't push for mandatory locks, but would sign the bill.

Whether that would say guns would be sold with locks, or that locks would be mandated in the home, is a matter of whatever legislation got sent to his desk. Last night, he said he wouldn't care about mandating locks "in the home" because you wouldn't be able to verify it.

He was quoted in a private interview I read today here - http://www.thefiringline.com:8080/forums/showthread.php?threadid=25465 - that he would sign a National CCW, but he sincerely doubted that it would ever come to pass. You can bet he won't talk about it with the mainstream press.

There is a universe of difference between saying locks have to be sold with guns
and saying they have to be USED! If the latter is the case, then he is not my guy!!

I've already bought guns that came with locks
and that doesn't bother me. I think the Taurus and Steyr integral locks are a neat idea.

But tell me, I have to lock up guns or be faced with the law - no!

Now, this is controversial - if Bush is going to sign a law that makes locks be sold with guns - then attach National CCW reciprocity to it - George. Give us something positive.

Or say that if like NICS, say hi-cap mags can now be sold with NICS.

Just don't fold, George.

If it came with your gun then why didn't you use it? :(

Joseph, in that debate he said that 80% of the guns now sold come with trigger locks, and that we can't have "trigger lock police" going to every house to see if locks are on the guns. Just about everything he's said so far leads me to believe he's not an anti. What I think he's doing is trying to avoid having the press call him "a pawn of the NRA," or "kissing the feet of the gun lobby,"
or "a right wing gun nut," or some other media cliche. Unfortunately, they're going to call him that no matter what he says, unless he proposes "common sense gun control laws" such as those enacted in Great Britain and Australia.

Face it, Joseph: McCain has stumbled big time in the last week. We'll see what happens on Tuesday.

Dick,

Yes, I would agree that McCain dug himself a nice big ol' hole. Can he climb out? I doubt it, and the numbers don't look good.

What does matter is that we unite behind W. when the time comes.

But we also need to focus on the Congress, as well, just in case ol' W. is as much of a politician as I think. It was the Congress that kept many of the wolves at bay. Maybe they just didn't want to give Clinton a victory this past year, and maybe that tune will change later.

If we can identify strong RKBA candidates, that will help the situation significantly. That's why we're building a database of those candidates. (Not-so-gentle nudge to all ya'll to dig up info for your local area and pass it on, like many of you have done already. ;) )

ABG!

I swear I'm not trying to make this up, but there is a big push on now by W. to woo women voters. Bush Targets N.Y. Women

Soccer moms are fine, but what concerns me is that a recent ABC poll regarding handgun control found that support for additional controls remains much higher among women (73 percent) than men (51 percent). Will W. fold to get the woman's vote in November?

Am I being paranoid. Tell me yes. I guess only time will tell.

Joseph, I believe a major reason why the Republican powers-that-be chose Bush was his appeal to women. Education has been a front and center issue for him from the outset. The Republican Party needs all those soccer moms that Clinton wooed in '96. Having said that, I do _not_ want to hear him pandering to those women by signing on to gun control proposals, and I suspect he'll tiptoe on those issues (I suspect and I hope).

You're 100% right on Congress. Until I can figure out how to run successfully in our district, I have to accept an anti as my congressman and give $$ and time to a pro-gun congressman in another district.

BTW, any ideas on how someone like me, with no elected experience, could get counseling on how to run for congress? It's been on my mind for several years now.

ABG,
Dick
