Bush up 16 in this poll

Some will say that it is no big deal because Bush Senior was ahead in 1992 and Dukakis was ahead in 1988 and Mondale was ahead in 1984.

But there is a difference. Each of those candidates started out ahead in the polls and found their leads evaporate. George W., on the other hand is watching his lead grow and it isn't because of a convention bump since it isn't until next week.

Rick,
Another distinction is that the poll is of 'likely voters' and not just all 'registered voters'.

I think there is a small bump. Gore will get one in 3 weeks, but I would imagine Bush keeps an 7-8 pt lead.

If people are looking at their possible cabenit picks etc... like NY Times suggests, the GOP has many, many more respected people to choose from. Powell to name one.

Hard work still ahead.

Don't get too complacent. Bush's lead just widened a little after the Cheney pick. Gore will get a bounce when he names Kerry or Graham. The good news is that Gore hasn't been able to get out of the 40% range yet; the bad news is that he isn't in full attack mode yet. Come Labor Day, things are going to get ugly and mean, which is Gore's M.O.
