Bush & Allen signs stolen in Arlington, Virginia

A friend of mine just called me to tell me that this George Bush & George Allen yard signs have been stolen, not only from his house, but from the homes of about a dozen of his neighbors.

For those of you who don't know, Arlington, VA, is an INCREDIBLY liberal/leftist enclave. My friend's street has a nice pocket of right-minded people on it, though.

My question is, does this break any sort of state or federal election laws?

Arlington Police are refusing to come out to take a report, insisting that it be filed through their phone system...

I lived in Arlington for 10 years, and it is, indeed, a liberal enclave. I live out in neigboring Fairfax county now, but I drive through Arlington regularly.

I don't know about those stolen signs, but as of yesterday, the Allen-Bush signs are the only ones that are up -- Robb-Gore signs are nowhere to be seen. The Arlington Dems seem to be complacent, while there are a lot more Allen-Bush signs than I would have expected, meaning the Repubs are motivated.

If the signs were stolen, it's probably just frustration that Allen is beating old-horse Robb and that Bush is beating Gore in Virginia overall, and yet, the Dems can't get people motivated enough to erect signs.

Tell your friend to take that as good news, and just put up new signs as often as it takes. Drive the @#$^ers crazy.

IIRC there is some law against removing or defacing political candidate signs. There was an incident some years ago here in people's socialist republik of kalifornia were a relative of loretta brixey (aka loretta sanchez) was caught removing Bob Dornan signs and replacing them with sanchez signs. It is a misdemeanor so the guy doing it got arrested but since there are so many flaming liberal judges here, I think he got off with a slap on the wrist.

Imbroglio,
The person removing Bob Dornan signs and replacing them with sanchez signs was none other than the husband of Loretta Sanchez.

It is illegal to remove campaign signs from private property, but nothing ever happens. In '98 my candidate had hundreds if not thousands of signs either stolen or trashed. Nothing came of it. But, since it's also illegal to post such signs on public property, I decided to go around and pull the signs of the anti candidate off public land. One of his volunteers stopped his car in the middle of the street, jumped out and started screaming until he was red-faced, promising to have me put in jail. I just stayed calm, told him they were illegal and offered to put them in his trunk. "Well what about your Reynolds signs?!!" he screamed. I told him to go ahead and take them. Funny thing, he didn't.

Anyway, that's a pretty boring a long way around saying that, yes, it's illegal but it happens in every campaign. And, up here where the Democrats learned their politics from Chicago pros, it's pretty tame stuff.

Here in Alexandria, adjacent to Arlington and to Fairfax County, the Bush & Allen signs far outnumber the Gore & Robb signs, and it is another democrat majority town.

Don't dispair, get more signs and keep your yard sprinkler hooked up, aimed, and ready to repel trespassers!

Mike,

Just remember, free speech is only for the tolerant and open minded liberals. We mean spirited and close minded conservatives must stiffle our views!

I went to my friend's for dinner last night.

All of the signs had been replaced at all of the homes, and there were some extras.

I'm going to put mine out this weekend.

I went to dinner last week, in Arlington, with a friend and a few of her friends. The friend’s friends were party activists, for the local cult of the donkey. Said couple attempted to key a car with a GWB bumper sticker. They didn’t understand why I stopped them. (No concept of property rights.) Dinner, understandably, did not go well. However, my delaying action allowed the owner of the GW-mobile to escape, unscathed.

Yup, the donkey’s are dumb but loyal in Arlington.

BTW, I understand that the majority of Robb's advertising effort is being spent in the No VA market, the most expensive in the state. All that is doing is placing him in a dead heat for the market, his strongest power base. State-wide, he is well behind.

My mom lives in Alexandria, and went out to some street festival on Mount Vernon Ave the other day. They had a Bush/Cheney table that she said was pretty lonely. She stopped by, got stickers and signs and volunteered to work for them on election day. She said she can't wait to piss off her neighbors in "Moscow on the Potomac," as she calls Alexandria. The signs are going to go over huge, apparently.

I was driving home through Arlington on Sunday evening, and I saw a man tossing Bush-Allen signs in the back of his truck from the center strip on Fairfax drive.

I noted his license, description and dropped the dime on him.

The woman who answered the non-emergency line asked, "Well, is he still out there?" At which point I drove back to the area, but he was gone. Oh, well. His info is now on file, in case they actually catch him at something.

Funny thing is, this morning driving to work, ALL the political signs were gone. My guess is the county police got tired of the juvenile pranks, and had someone yank all of them on public property. I’ll be interested to see how quickly they re-appear.
