A new presidential poll shows George W. Bush leading Al Gore for the first time in weeks, while another new poll has Gore still leading.
But even more interesting is how the mainstream media promoted the one favoring Gore and ignored the one favoring Bush.
The respected bipartisan Voter.com Battleground 2000 Poll found that among voters most likely to vote if the election were held today, 50 percent would choose Republican Bush, 44 percent Democrat Gore, 4 percent Green Party nominee Ralph Nader and 1 percent Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan. The margin of error was 3.1 percent.
The poll, released Thursday, was based on a four-day rolling sampling of 1,000 likely voters, conducted by Democrat pollster Celinda Lake of Lake, Snell, Perry & Associates and Republican pollster Ed Goeas of Tarrance Group.
But a search for poll news on the wire services Thursday found only polls showing Gore ahead. The Reuters headline "Gore Maintains Lead Over Bush in Latest Poll" referred to Pew Research Center's poll showing Gore leading Bush 47 percent to 41 percent "among all voters."
Pew's poll of 1,999 registered voters had a 2.2 percent margin of error. Among the 1,237 respondents identified as likely voters, Gore led by 48 percent to 43 percent. Nader polled 2 percent and Buchanan 1 percent.
The survey ran from Aug. 24 to Sept. 10. Reuters reported Gore's lead was slightly narrower in the second half of the polling period.
A list of earlier stories showed a Reuters poll Sept. 13 favoring Gore by 7 points. But no mention of the Voter.com Battleground 2000 Poll could be found there or on the Web sites of such leftist bastions as CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post.
