burris signature ring mounting

Hey all. Im mounting a 4-12x50mm ao vortex crossfire ii on a ruger american using burris signature zee rings. With the 0 inserts that came with it the objective is just barely touching the barrel. I was going to get 2 of the .02 inserts and put them in front and back.. Is this the way to go to get my scope mounted? Or a bad idea

That would work if your reticle is centered after using the offset inserts. Mount the scope like you plan, place the rifle in a rest so it doesn't move, remove the bolt and look down the barrel at a distant object. Are the object and the reticle aligned with each other? If they are and your scope clears the barrel, you're ready to go. If they're not, you will need higher rings.

Ok. The scope fits with enough room to adjust the objective. But the lens capswon't fit in front. Would using the inserts be a better idea than using shims under the bases?

This is a great method for bore-sighting a scope but there's no expectation that the reticle will be properly aimed as soon as the scope is mounted.... in other words, finding that it's not doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the way the scope is mounted.

That's the purpose of the Signature rings, mounting the scope so the centered reticle is aligned with the bore.
