I have one in .22/22mag. Now I want one in .44spl, but all I see on gunbroker are 45LC.

Anybody have experience with one? How does it shoot/regulate to the sights?

I might be wrong, but I didn't think Colt made the Buntline in anything but .45 Colt (aside from the .22's). Maybe some repros were made in .44 Special.

I've seen 3rd gen Colt buntlines in .44 spl. Always a minority compared to 45 but I like that Elmer Keith proved you could hot load the .44 whereas the 45 didn't quite have enough steel in the cylinder.

Also occasionally you saw Colt dual cylinders with .44/40 - .44 special. Buntline I don't know about dual cylinder. Not many if any.

Buntline Special

Sorry if this isn't the right spot, but as a youngster I read cowboy novels and cartoons, and there was always the talk about a "Buntline Special", which was a colt type revolver with an extreme long barrel. Does this model actually exist?

As far as "clones" go . . Uberti used to list a "Buntline Target" in their catalog . . I think it is still available? Unfortunately . . their catalog listing only showed it in 45 Colt and .357 Mag.

If Colt made 'em . . I would imagine you'd have to do some real looking to scare one up in 44 special. My suggestion is if you are serious about getting one (as in willing to spend the $$), you might go over to the Colt Forum and so some looking. You might be able to post an inquiry there and someone be able to point you in the right direction if anyone has one to sell.

Good luck! :)

There really was a "Ned Buntline" or rather there was a writer named Edward Zane Carroll Judson, Sr., who used Buntline as a pen name. Google "Ned Buntline" for more information; the Wikipedia article appears to be accurate.

Colt made a number of long barrel revolvers (12") in that period (IIRC the cost was $.50 for each extra inch) so the story of Judson presenting such guns to Wild West characters has at least some basis in fact.

An original "Buntline Special", if found and authenticated, would probably bring in the high six figures.

I've never seen a Buntline 44, only 45. There's a factory engraved 10" SAA on Gunbroker right now starting at $1,999. No bids last I looked. Stylin'...
