Bullseye pistol choices???

I've finally decided to shell out for a good beginner .22 target pistol, to use in collegiate pistol competition (maybe some International or NRA Bullseye after I graduate.) I've narrowed my choices down to either a Sig/Hammerli Trailside (6", adj. sights) or a S&W M41 (7").

The advantages of the Trailside include:
- Made by Hammerli!!
- Inexpensive ($389 vs. $600 for an M41.)
- Reports of accuracy, trigger action, and ergonomics are very positive.
- It's not a S&W.

The S&W has some points as well:
- My club uses M41s.
- Very good accuracy, trigger, etc...
- Lots of aftermarket parts available.
- The M41 has a long history of being THE dominant .22 bullseye gun.

So, whaddya think?? Comments are welcome.

Later,
Chris

I have and shoot both and they are as exactly comparable as two similar tools can be in my opinion. After thousands of rounds I could not advise you... except -- which one do you like the feel of and the looks of the best???

Mine even like the same ammo best! And it's exactly opposite what I would have thought. They both shoot QuickShock the most accurately. Most target pistols as you most likely know, prefer standard velocity or slow velocity. My Model 41 likes Stingers too but not nearly as much as QuickShocks.

They both also like the surplus Russian Olympic target loads but I suspect that is hard to find as I bought mine nearly 10 years ago.

Hello. I have no experience with the Trailside, but have owned and shot an M41 for about 25 years. I do not recall a jam or misfeed and accuracy is beyond my skill. I don't believe S&W makes this gun anymore so you'd have to pick up a clean used one. I suspect that the S&W is considerably heavier than the other choice and that might prove advantageous in serious competition. Best and good luck. Please let us know which you buy?

Let me ask a dumb question. All I ever hear for the S&W M41 is praise. So why on earth are they no longer produced? I suppose it must be that the sales weren't there. Was that becuase the sales price was too high, due to the expense of making the complicated mechanisms this pistol uses? Or some other reason?

S&W still lists them on their website with both 5.5" and 7" barrels. Not a guarantee, but I think they should still be available. If not there are lots of used ones out there.

The S&W Model 41 is still being manufactured. However, it is expensive, and I'm on a budget. Used ones don't seem to drop in price much, maybe $600 down to $550. So I'm leaning towards the Trailside as of now.

One other question. I checked out Larry's Guns ( www.larrysguns.com ) looking for Trailside spare parts and found a "fully adjustable trigger" for sale. Does anyone know if this is the same five-way adjustable trigger offered on the now-defunct Hammerli 208s??

Thanks all,
Chris

Before you buy a 41, shoot one. I had one and I was bothered by a minor torquing when it fired. Not bad, but enough to bother me. I now shoot a Hi Standard military grip Trophy model. They are about $500-600 used and in like new condition as it seems from what I see in "Gun List."
It does not torque and the adjustable trigger makes it better for me than the M41.

Just my opinion.

Just took it on vacation and a buddy and I went to his range and shot the center out of a Shoot-N-See stickon.

Email Larry's Guns on your trigger question. He responds fast to email inquiries.

I can vouch for the M41. My dad had one when I was a pup with the extendable front sight and I learned to shoot pistol with that and a Colt Python.

I currently own a 41 with standard and extended length barrels and it is a great shooting gun. It hates Eley Tenex, but loves anything CCI makes - even the Blazers.

I don't shoot it much anymore since I bought my Walther GSP, but, I break it out 4 or 5 times a year for posterity's sake.

Unfortunatley, Larry (and his staff) is at Camp Perry for the next few weeks. Wish I was there too.

I'm placing the order tomorrow. So far, the Trailside 6" is getting the nod. Will let you all know how it turns out.

Thanks.

Chris
