Bullpup rifles

Hey everyone i have a few questions and i hope u guys can answer them for me. I have been looking for a bullpup rifle that is not fully automatic. I only know three- SA80, FAMAS, and the Bushmaster M17. I especially would like to find a FAMAS but i don't know where to get one or the cost. ALso i do not know how well they shoot or perform. The same thing goes for the M17. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know nothing about Bullpup rifles so am not qualified to comment on them. But you ommitted the Ruger Mini-14. They are not available from the factory in that configuration but Choate offers a bullpup stock for them that is an easy fit.

I did own a Bullpup Mossberg 12 gauge and was not enamored with it.

Welcome to TFL,

Welcome to TFL! You didn't mention the Steyr AUG/USR series. If you live in the US getting a FAMAS would be like bagging a unicorn ;)

Valmet M-82 and another AK Derived gun, the Norinco Bullpup whose name escapes me but it might be M-86. I seem to remember seeing the FAMAS on the shelves of B&B Sales in Southern California once. Never remember seeing the SA80 though.

I have an M17S. The trigger leaves alot to be desired but if you can get over that you will love the rifle. It shoulders very fast and natural. You are going to have to put a red dot sight on it because the iron sights are only useful to about 6 feet. It already has an integrated scope rail. I put an Aimpoint on mine. The price should run you around $580 to $600. The nice thing about it is the 21.5" heavy barrel yet the overall length is shorter than a 10/22. While the gun feels a little heavy when you pick it up, the weigh distribution is such that you don't notice it when you are holding it. My girlfriend has trouble with the 10/22 because it is front heavy but she has no problem holding the M17S. I also noticed that it is inherently cleaner than my roomates AR-15 and I have not had a single jam or FTF since I've had it. Everybody that has shot it wants one.

I have seen two FAMAS rifles at gun shows, both were priced at around $8000.
There was also a Valmet bullpup imported briefly, but it runs almost as much.
The Steyr AUG can be had for about $3000 for a shooter and is, IMHO, the best of the lot.
The Bushmaster M17 is not bad for the price and if you have to have a bullpup and funds are limited, this would be the way to go.
Avoid the AK variant bullpups--reciprocating charging handles and bullpups don't go together.

Thanks! I will check into the M17 and your right i totally forgot about the Styer AUG. Great reports about the guns yet those come from books which are no match for experience. I will check into it and i must admit i am sadden by the fact that i cannot find a FAMAS for a reasonable price.

There are others...

There are several kits I have seen at gunshows for bullpupping your AK.
Chote makes a crappy bullpup kit for your Mossberg and your Ruger 10-22 and Mini-14.
There there are the very special bullpup stocks for they M-14 battle rifle made by McMillan - if you can find one.

George: I believe that Choate does NOT make that crappy Bullpup conversion you are talking about. It's a company called Muzzle-Lite IIRC. Choate is much classier than that. Any way you look at the bullpup conversions, they are all crap.

The Bullpup layout is sound. There are only two problems with it.

1. Left handed shooters are often out of luck unless there is a way to easily convert the rifle from right to left handed shooting - and back again.

2. The length of the rifle is often too short for legal civilian ownership... It is a very militant look. (which I like)

George, have you read or heard about FN's new bullpup?

It ejects neither right nor left, but forward and then only after 4-5 rounds have been fired. Apparently, it stores spent cases in a tube above (or below, can't remember offhand) and pushes them out one by one as the tube fills. It's supposed to be fully modular, allowing attachments of 40mm single shot grenade launcher, 4 shot 40mm grenade launcher, and plans to attach a 20mm semi-auto cannon/grenade launcher ala OICW, but considerably lighter.

I am not sure about that trick ejection - Why? Whats the point in adding a mechanical function that could contribute to a malfunction for no real benifit? I dont think I like that aspect of it - but the rest of the rifle is very sweet looking and from what I've read about it - is outstanding.

However -

I am more of a fan of Isreal's TAVOR bullpup rifle. I've read everything I could find about it, and its is just SNARLY! I especially am fond of the MICRO TAVOR.
I admit that I have never even seen one in person - but its one of my favorite guns to use in ROGUE SPEAR! :D

If I had a team of machinists and engineers at my disposal - I could show you a real bullpup. I've had this design bumping around for about 10 years in my head... maybe someday I might be able to get it built.

George, have you seen the Singapore Bullpup rifle?

It's a right-eject rifle but if you can tell by the picture, it has a port buffer that throws the brass down and forward clearing the shooter from either the right or left hand shooting position. A rather unique solution IMO.

Thanks for the info and i must admit that i started to drool when i saw it. I must agree that the Trevor is a sweet looking gun but i still love the FAMAS. I have a question about another gun that i have in my possesion. I have an AR-15 made by colt in 1963 or something like that it has no bolt assist and from what i know this is the rifle that the airforce used to guard its bases in the sixties before the army took up the M-16. I was wondering if you guys know how much it is worth. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
