Bullets for Guide Gun

Slipped away from the keyboard long enough to load some 45-90 BPCR rounds with the cast bullets I sweated over last weekend. After I put the BP away I spotted some primed 45-70 cases and decided my BPCR shouldn't get to have all the fun. I'll be testing some new jacketed bullets in my Guide Gun tomorrow, might as well run some cast bullets through it too.:D Loaded up some mild 2400 loads (30 grains) just to see how they'll do. Never fired cast bullets in this rifle, should be able to push them a bit faster if needed. Guess some other powders could be better, been thinking about 5744, any other favorites for light-medium loads under cast bullets?
Can't wait for Lyman's new cast bullet handbook to come out, need another loading manual. ;)

Cast bullets for the Guide Gun? Lyman makes a real good 400 gr FP mould that my GG really likes and accounted for a mule deer. My GG leaded until I started sizing at .460 and now life is good. Reloader 7 is the powder that you will want to use. RL7 makes any cast bullet shoot good in 45/70.

Thanks, Edward. I use RL7 in my jacketed bullets, didn't see it listed for cast. I use the 405 grn 457193 Lyman and I'm working on a hunting load for it, maybe two! I started using RL7 many years ago with .35 Remington. Been awhile, price tag says $12.50.
Was looking at the #3 manual from Midway and they listed a 4th Edition with a "coming soon" status, salvadore.

45-70 cast

Anyone have any recipes for 45-70 cast with IMR4198? I'd like to stay around 300-350 gr. if possible. TX, how do you like that 325gr. mould?

325 gr is the Hornady FTX jacketed bullet, same as loaded in their LeverEvolution load. Whole 'nuther subject but I like it, rifle likes it. :D I've only cast & loaded the 457193 405 gr bullet so far.
