Assuming you're talking about an AR-15 in .223 (16", 1-8" twist, 5R, probably a Smith and Wesson one at that), you can shoot any bullet that will fit into the magazine.
Actually, a 1-8" will stabilize the 75 and 80gr VLD bullets pretty well too. They have to be single loaded because they won't fit in the magazine and are pretty much a handloading-only proposition, but there it is.

Good to shoot - I've used 55 gr FMJ, V-max and SP and 62 gr FMJ from Lake City. The V-max was most accurate.

I thought that the 75/77 grain bullets could be loaded to mag length?

That depends on which 75-77 gr bullets you're talking about.
Not all bullets are created equal.

Are you going to tell us which brand can be loaded to Mag length, or just tease us?

Hornady 75gr A-Max = too long for magazine
Berger 75gr VLD = too long for magazine
It's not necessarily specific to a given bullet weight so much as bullet shape. The 80gr bullets, the 75gr A-Max and the Berger VLDs are longer, spikier bullets for shooting long-range.

Wow, thats a selection. I need to dust off the Mini-14 and see if its 1-7" can shoot some heavyweights.
For some, 80gr SMKs fit just fine.
