bullet-riddled rural road signs: question!

Are they being shot by people in moving cars? I've always wondered. Are bullet-ridden road signs still a prevalent phenomenon? It made quite an impression on my when I was a kid on a road trips in the country. I could just image some dude hanging out of the passenger side of a car or truck blasting away at approaching signage.

'Fes up if you know a "friend" who has done this. Actually, don't do that.

They're being shot by unsafe morons who give gunowners everywhere a bad name.
