Im going to Croatia on Friday week for a driven boar hunt, mostly oak/beech forest and fairly wide open, most shots are less than 50m, the question is, i have loaded some 180gr interbond ballistic tip bullets for the 30-06 and i dont know if they are the ticket for the job, some folk say they be the biz and others say ballistic tips in the trees are a waste of time as they explode if they hit a twig, so need some opinions on that, they do the job on deer very and i have no doubt they will have the desired effect on boar too its just the whole "they explode if they touch anything on the way" arguement, as the boar will be on the move,

The Interbond is a great bullet and will serve you well in the 'o6 for your application.

Ignore the "Explosion" opinion but certainly try and avoid shooting through brush as best you can.

Deflection of the bullet is your concern, not explosion.
 
^^ and to go along with that, it doesn't matter what bullet you use. If you hit something in the flightpath, you will get deflection to some degree.

I have been using the Hornady SST's for a while for hunting and have never had a problem.

BTW, here in South Africa many hunters using the 30-06 in thick bush favour the 200 -220Gr round-nose bullets.

Apparently they are less succeptible to deflection from hitting a twig.
(Spitzer bullets are said to have a tendency to deflent more in similar circumastances)

Please note, we are talking about twigs, not anything thicker than that.

Interbonds will do very nicely. On the deflection statement, it has been proven that any bullet of any shape will suffer deflection by hitting anything between the bore and the target - for decades. The odds of even hitting the target more than 20 feet beyond the deflection increase exponentially.

If they exploded on twigs, they would have exploded on the deer you said they worked fine on.

No bullet is good when it hits brush--deflection is a good possibility.

It's BT's designed for varmints that come apart. Not those designed for big game. The Swift Scirocco bullets use a ballistic tip to start the expansion which is moderate with deep penetration. They'll penetrate heavy shoulder bones.

Be advised, however, that Nosler BT big game bullets are really a long range bullet designed to open effectively at extended ranges. There have been reports of these bullets opening up quickly at closer ranges and being a little destructive.

I loaded some 30-06 Nosler 150 grs. that a friend has used extensively on Antelope and Deer (and so have his friends) and they performed fine even at closer ranges without excessive meat destruction. They were loaded to a MV of about 2800 fps---fairly moderate for an '06.

Loading them hot may be a different matter where close range is concerned.

I suspect the 180 gr. is constructed heavily enough to work just fine on Wild Boar. Be interesting to see what happens if you hit a shoulder on a really big one. Good luck.

have no pics yet but have some from last year, if you can wait till tue week pics galore, When i say ballistic tip they are actually interbond with the plastic point, anything with plastic tip is usually (incorrectly) called a ballistic tip over here, sorry...
