bullet lube and powder

Is it possible to contaminate a powder charge with a bit of bullet lube (think pan lubing) on the base of the bullet? Up until now I have always cleaned off the base of the bullet before loading but an ol'timer I shot next to said I was wasting my time. What say the experts?

I dont think so.... i could be wrong... let the experts chime in.... but i have never cleaned off bullet lube from the bullet bases (never head you were supposed to) and ive never had any problems..... but i have only loaded cast within the past 2 years or so... so i cant speak for long term storage.

If it is the lube in a pan which you melt using the Lee Pan Method, you are required to wipe them bottoms clean on a cloth. However if you us the Lee Lube Alox it is not necessary. Just follow the instructions.

Never in my experience. Most folks just swipe the base across a rag to wipe off any excess lube, but they worry too much.
I went to tumble lubing a couple of decades ago and haven't pan lubed in all that time.

I use a 450 lube/sizer and sometimes I get lube on the base, never noticed any problems or any indications that there might be a problem when I didn't clean it off.

That being said, I clean the bases by wiping on a paper plate for so long it seems like forever now, but I didn't when I first started out 40 yrs ago.

A little drag on a paper plate works better than a rag.
