What caliber do you recommend for a beginner I was thinking 9mm what do you guys think for concealed carry, home defense/cqb,and target practice

If you want a semi-automatic, IMHO 9mm is a good choice. It's probably the least expensive centerfire cartridge to buy -- curiously (if you haven't already discovered this) 9mm costs less than .380 Automatic, which is the same diameter but less powerful.

If you would prefer to begin with a revolver, there may be other good choices for a "do-it-all" cartridge as a starting point.

9mm is a good place to start. Cheap and plentiful to practice with with low recoil.

It would work for concealed carry. There are more powerful cartridges out there, but, I wouldn't start smaller than 9mm

For a revolver, stick with 38 Special/357 Magnum. For a semiauto, the 9mm is a great choice, never a mistake.

Avoid oddball calibers, it just means paying more for harder-to-find ammo. For a newbie, stick to 38 Special, 9mm Luger, 45 ACP, or 22lr for your first handguns. If you only buy one, the 38 Special or 9mm are both fine choices.

Don't forget to look at barrel length, sights, etc, and plan on putting good coin into a belt and holster. A hundred bucks for carry leather is not excessive.

Do get 500 rounds of ammo, plan on shooting half by end of 2015, the rest in 2016.

Couldn't have said it any better.
