Bull barrels and tapered cone barrels

I have always been curious about the Tactical Elite offered by Wilson Combat. The tapered cone barrel and what it feels like to have that much additional weight at the muzzle intrigues me. I have recently been considering having one installed in a 1911 of mine. Does anyone have any experience with a tapered cone or bull barrel? Some of the Kimbers have them, but I want information on a full-size 1911 with one, not a 1911 with a short slide.

I have shot a couple and have a very neutral opinion. If they are well done they work just fine, but my experience has been that they are not quite as accurate as guns with a standard bushing (also well fitted). The difference is small, and unless you're into bullseye or machine rests you'd probably never notice it.

It's been a long time, but I don't remember any real difference in felt recoil. They're only a little heavier so I'm not sure that any change in recoil would be substantial.

hdm25- Yesterday I enjoyed some range time with both my Kimber Gold Match and Custom Compact in steel. The Gold Match is a standard 5" 1911 and the Custom Compact a 4" with tapered cone barrel. I shot my target reloads out of both and found the compact to be just as easy to control and to my chagrin more accurate. If your intended gun locks up tightly I suspect that a tapered cone on a 5" barrel would give even greater control.
Just my .02 speculation.

My experience is with a short Kimber. Sorry, but the information may help.

I have a Kimber Ultra Elite with a 3" tapered/cone barrel. Range lore has it that tapered barrels have a quicker recovery time. I don't know if that is true or not, but I certainly know that my Kimber, with the tapered barrel and only a 3" barrel at that, it very accurate out to 25 yards and fantastic closer in. Is it more accurate or less accurate than a standard barrel? I don't know. What I do know is that I am definitely satisfied with its abilities.

Gordon Fallick (email gordon@bigbore-guns.com)makes his full-sized guns with a tapered cone. You might try contacting him.

I have a couple of guns with Schuemann 5" bull barrels. I have put a lot of rounds through them. I really like them. IMO they keep the gun locked up a little longer. The perceived recoil feels less and the gun kicks less and tracks straighter. With a steel guide rod they are really flat shooting, but too heavy for regular concealed carry. With a tungsten rod they slow down the swing somewhat. They definitely shoot well. IMO there is NO difference in the accuracy potential of a properly fitted barrel of either system. If anything a bull barrel is easier to fit.

FWIW, IMO the flange barrels look cool.
