bulk 9mm ammo in MA

Hi,
I've been doing a lot of shooting with my new Beretta 92FS lately. Now that I have a 9mm that actually works, I'm going through ammo at an alarming rate. I haven't had any trouble finding it in stores, but it is getting rather expensive... it seems the cheapest I can find in-state is $14/50rds. I assume if I buy it in bulk, it will be cheaper, but I'm not aware of any stores that sell ammo in bulk, and I don't know which online retailers are reputable. An additional complication is I don't know which online retailers will ship to MA (there is apparently some confusion regarding the laws on such transactions... I have it on good authority that it is legal, and I've also read of a bill winding its way through the legislature that basically says "we didn't mean our laws to prevent online ammo purchases" explicitly).

I'm looking for good ammo for target practice. My Beretta seems to like everything I've put in it so far, which include Federal, Blazer, and Remington. Depending on the cost, I may be willing to buy up to 1000rds. I've heard you can get some nifty water-tight boxes buying ammo by the thousand. Any suggestions?

Well, "considered" might be too strong a word. I've been aware of the option, but I have no idea how to do it, or how much the equipment costs, or how much time it takes... what kind of savings can I expect, and what kind of time commitment?

Go to the Reloading Section of this forum. There is a recent thread there entitled "I don't know squat about reloading". Read the thread, and it should answer your questions.

I think you will enjoy reloading. Many of us find it very relaxing especially if you enjoy tangilble accomplishments such as making something with your hands.

I estimate my cost per round of 9mm is about 14 cents not including brass or the pro-rated cost of your initial investment in reloading equipment. Make a part of your intial investiment a book or two on reloading. Lee has a good publication as does Lyman and others.

If you shoot a lot, I would recommend a turret press at a minimum. There are a lot of choices out there.

A word of caution - Reloading can become addictive, and you may find yourself improving your equipment and library as you gain experience.

most places will NOT ship ammo to MA, their understanding is that it is illegal

It is NOT, but they don't care to find out otherwise

I thought I saw 9mm on sale at Dick's Sporting Goods in Dedham. Still not as cheap as reloading, but I think it was like $12.95 or something. You might want to give them a call if you want to buy local.

Around here (Texas), Wal-Mart has Federal 9mm 115-gr FMJ's for around $9.50 per box. I doubt they'd be that much higher in MA, but I could be wrong.

Perhaps they don't call it Taxachussets for nothing?

I am from mass also, the never ending battle of trying to find good priced ammo is starting to eat away at my wallet. I plan on getting into reloading soon but in the meantime I picked up a .22:D

I grew up in Dedham, my folks still live there

From time to time, I find a good deal on 100 round packs of 9mm, 115 gr at Dick's, as well

Georgia Arms is my bulk 9mm supplier...

but I don't have a clue as to if they can ship to you.

Don't know if they go to gun shows in MA or even if you have them.... but if you are willing to pay a lot for a lot then there is always a way, depending on how close to the boarder you are.
